Just a tip. Cellphones may not work well........
« on: April 30, 2005, 07:57:17 AM »
I can't remember if my Tmobile cellphone worked anywhere near Willville.
I'll try to find the closest place most cellphones work, and pass on the info.

There's probably a high, clear, spot nearby that cellphones will work near the campground.
Like TWO, you may have to ride a couple of miles to that spot if you need to make a call at night.

Just a 'heads up' in case anyone is promising to call the wife nightly!

You may want to grab a phone card to be safe!  There are still a few payphones in the area....I think!

If the weather holds like it is supposed to be monday I am probably going to ride up that way and check the area out. I can give a report on cell service with alltel when I get back. If I run into anyone with a different service I'll see how theirs is. I'll keep an eye out for payphones too.

PeteSC, You still wanting to ride up and check it out?

I've been looking at a few cell service coverage maps lately, since I am getting ready to switch providers.  It looks like Verizon has decent coverage in the Western VA/NC area.  I'll probably talk to a salesperson today (dread it!) and report back.

NCbandit.   Weather looks pretty good.  Just started raining like heck here.
  Monday is a distinct possibilty!

I may be on my DR650, since my Bandit is in hibernation.....still.
IF weather clears up locally today, or tomorrow, can pull it out of the trailer, and do the spring startup ritual!

(Cross fingers, add fresh gas, charge battery, check tires, new plugs, and place a garland of chicken bones and garlic around the windhshield before hitting the 'start' button!) :bigok:

Just got back a little while ago. There is no service at the campground and very little out and about, me and pete were standing at tuggle gap, I was on the phone and a guy pulled in and said "you have service" like it just ain't supposed to happen. I have alltel and had almost full signal strength there, pete has tmobile and had absolutely none, I can't verify verizon, cingular, sprint as I don't have one.

The area looks awesome, we made about a 30 mile loop today then I had to head back. Pete was going to ride some more to check it out as he is staying the night tonight, so I'm sure he'll have some more info. The campground is very nice, looks like plenty of area, communal campfire at night, even saw some horseshoe pits. Be prepared for abnormal weather, the forecast for there was 59 for a high, with the clouds and the wind it felt like it only made it to about 50, I froze my a$$ off.

Pete will have more info. tomorrow when he gets home, he's got a couple pics to post too.

I'm probably not much help but oh well, it was a good ride (290 miles) for me.

Pete It was nice to meet you, I'll try to make the trip next week too!

That's a great excuse, good thinking Pete.  Not that I have anybody to call, but if I were still married, I would use that excuse.  Sorry hun, no cell service :beers: .

Cell phones ??? Back in the day bikers carried chains, knives and guns. Now it's cell phone, palm pilots and GPS units.  Aw the good old days. Gone but not forgotten

I've got a skateboard with a weed-whacker engine bolted to the back.

My T-Mobile phone didn't work in Willville.
It worked on the BRP at the Pilot MTN overlook, about 10 miles west of Meadows of Dan, and a few other places.
NCbandits ALLTEL phone worked at Tuggles Gap.
This is going to be one of those situations where you pull the phone out at each rest stop, and cross your fingers.

SOme phones may work in Meadows of Dan,  there is cell service.
Will, the owner of Willville said some phones work at night in the campground, in the middle of the 'open' area.
