JACK UP KIT?
« on: March 20, 2006, 11:36:16 AM »
Hi there, just got myself a 55mm jack up kit for my 600 bandit 98. Was gonna start fitting it on saturday when a friend of my dads asked me if I had the Front fork spring preload spacers, I didn't order these as i didn't know i needed them but my dads mate who has had a bandit for a lot longer than I have said I would definately need them. Can anyone tell me if these spacers are essential or can I get away with fitting just the dogbones i have.  I did try a search on this site and I did find lots of stuff about jack up kits and dogbones but couldn't find the answer im after. Please Help

Never heard of you needing anything but the dogbones, but im new, so don't shoot me if im wrong... Fabricated my own dogbones for my 97 b6, and they worked great..

I put a set of 35mm on my K2 12S, didn't have tp put any spacers in the front.

One thing I would suggest as the next upgrade is change the front fork springs. Progressive has a nice set for around $75CDN..installed shouldn't be more that $120 CDN. This will help stop the massive dive if you hit the brakes hard. 55mm jack will certainly give you a good dive..especially if your going fast and have some weight on you.

Don't worry about the spacers.

I had a 35mm kit and it came with spacers, but I never installed them. Sold the kit when I went to a Busa rear shock and the guy that bought the kit from me didn't install the spacers either.

I'm sure they'd help, I was just too lazy to go to the trouble.

Nice one thanks for the help. I get it fitted this weekend. Looks like it'll be a tricky job though.

It's actually REALLY easy to do.

Tire removal

1: place on centre stand (obvious)
2: remove cotter pin on rear wheel nut (22mm)
3: remove nut for rear axle (have someone stand in front of bike - incase lifting on wrench throws off centre stand)
4: remove bolt for torque-link arm (14mm) (this will drop the RR caliper when removing wheel)
5: remove wheel axle
6: drop caliper
7: drop wheel and remove chain
8: remove wheel (push caliper out of way when passing rim) (Spacers on left & right)
9: remove chain guard (you'll see why later)

DBone links:

1: remove bottom nut(17mm) & bolt (14mm) (DO NOT touch shock bolts) (there's 2 washers)
2: remove top nut and bolt from Dbones (2 more washers)
3: to get top bolt out push the rubber chain guide over and down
4: clean bolts, nuts, washers, axles.
5: grease bolts & axle (easier to put back in)
6: put top bolt in with new Dbones (don't forget washer - on inside of Dbones) ; hand tight for now
7: lift swing arm and put lower bolt back in (don't forget washers on inside)
8: tighten up the nuts on the Dbones to proper torque specs. (don't remember off hand - PM and I'll e-mail you the PDF file)
9: Put wheel back in - don't forget spacers (chain before axle) - put axle in (don't tighten yet)
10: attach bolt for torque-link arm
11: adjust rear wheel back to adjusting plates
12: tighten axle nut - put cotter pin in
13: re-install chain guard
14: torque EVERYTHING!
15: open a beer and enjoy your work.

YOU'RE DONE!

It is all pretty straight forward as explained above.......makes it loads easier if you still have the centre stand fitted tho...ha :duh: Cuz you can't use a paddock stand either!?!?!

Struggled on my own trying to get the bike up on a scrambler lift/stand. All sorted now though and didn't use anything, but the dogbones.
