I just won a nice Hayabusa shock on eBay and I'm wondering what kind of lowering links (dogbones) should I purchase to retain the stock height of the back end? There are several dogbones sold with different lowering heights and I don't know which one to pick. I have searched for the answer in the forums but haven't found anything specific enough. Any help is appreciated.

According to the FAQ it should only raise the tail 1.18" or 30 MM.

Gen 1 B12 Shocks are 300MM (11.8") Long with a 64MM (2.5") stroke
Gen 2 B12 Shocks are 320MM (12.6") Long with a 61MM (2.4") stroke
All Hayabusa Shocks are 330MM (13.0") Long with a 72MM (2.8") stroke

If you decide you want to try a shock not already mentioned as known swaps, measure it to see how compatible it will be with your bike. Keep in mind a shock 10mm longer than stock will raise the tail ~30mm, 10mm shorter will lower the tail ~30mm.

Thank you very much for the detailed explanation. I am getting a 2004 Hayabusa shock for a 2002 B12, which means I need to lower it by 30mm to get back to stock rear end height.

Based on that calculation Holeshot adjustable struts should work fine as they lower by approximately 31mm. The only problem is that neither Holeshot nor other vendors show the exact length between holes on their links.

I would like to be able to shop around and possibly find links that will offer three positions (3cm lower, stock and 3cm higher) in combination with the busa shock that's 1cm longer. If I knew the exact stock hight length between dog bone holes for busa shock I might even get the struts made to order. I hope I wasn't too confusing in trying to explain my dilemma :).

Now, if you were to add a hole to have the stock position, where would you put it?

That's a good question :). I saw some struts on eBay with three holes in them and I thought... I know that the difference in shock length is only 1cm per 3cm height, but I don't think that translates linearily to strut length (linkage is not symetrical). I'll buy Holeshot if I don't have any other choice, but it would be nice if there were alternatives, price not being an insignificant factor. After all, the shock cost me $20 and struts for $75 don't really make much sense.

It's not in the FAQ, but it should be. I think I'll have a good machinist make them for me. It's pretty straight-forward, but I have neither tools nor material.

My bad, I was looking at General M/C FAQ.

Anyway, I have decided to make my own. I still need to know the dimensions for the shorter than stock dogbones/struts that will allow me to retain the stock rear end height after I install the Hayabusa shock. I'll be happy with the exact dimensions of the Holeshot struts (lowering holes only relevant). Anyone?

1/4" (6.5mm) longer should be real close. I say this because I had lifting dogbones on before and they were 1/4" shorter and I put the stock pieces back on when I installed the Busa shock so I could keep the tail at about the same level as before. With the lifting bones & stock rear shock with the bike on the centerstand, the rear tire barely cleared the ground (~1/8"), with the stock bones & Busa shock the tire clears the ground by ~1/4" - so it's pretty darn close.

Actually you need to lower the shock 10 mm. You are confusing tail height and shock height.

No, I don't need to lower the shock, I need to keep my tail height the same after changing to a longer shock. It's not easy being clear when there are three parameters to consider:

1. Shock - I'm changing to a 1cm longer one
2. Tail height - I want it to remain the same
3. Dogbones/struts - In order to satisfy condition 2 and having in mind change 1 I have to put in shorter ones. I want to know the exact length of the dogbones I need (from hole to hole).

I can't get any clearer than that.
