Author Topic: Clipons w/o dropping fork tubes? (Read 6581 times)

Hello, over the winter I am turning my 1G 12B into a track only bike. I have a gsxr 1100 rear shock on the bike so that props my rear end up a bit. Because of this, I really don't want to drop the front forks at all.

Looking at the availabilty of the 43mm clipons, could a guy simply put the clipons under the top triple tree bracket? Anyone try this? I realize fairing clearance may be an issue, but that is the least of my concerns as I can remove or re-work the panels to fit....

I did what your talking about a few weeks ago. I have a 2001 1200s but I took off the fairing so the clearence wasn't an issue. I put a busa shock on the back and I didn't want to have to deal with the forks so I got some and put them on. I got some Woodcraft clip-ons off ebay for a fraction of what they cost. They were very attractive to me b/c the brackets are in two pieces so I didn't have to drop the forks or take the top of the triple tree off. I also like the bars themselves b/c they are twice as thick as your standard bars which seems to cut down some of the vibration.

In my opinion, the clip-ons give the bike a more solid feel. That may be b/c they're mounted to the fork themselves or it might be in my head, I don't know. I am happy with them though. I don't have a picture of them yet but if you want me to I can take one in the next few days when i get back into town.

I'd ike t see a pc of that too. My 98 B12 sees alot of tracktime. If I dont get a smaller track bike, I'd like to do a 3hr. enduro on the b12

Thanks guys, so sounds like placing the clipons under the top triple tree bracket is definitly do-able. And I would love to see some pics Doch!

Might want to be mindful of the clip-on's positioning so they don't hit the tank at full lock, since the creases the factory put in the tank seem to be there for handlebar clearance more than simple aesthetics.
Of course, for a track bike, you may not care about needing to turn that sharp or any nicks that may occur from contact.

Just thinking on the keyboard...

EXACTLY!

On the same note, I would love to find a steering dampener for a 1G 12B. I know they got em for the 2G, but I havn't seen anything for a 1G, if I could get my hands on a 2G version, I bet I could make it fit.

BTW, I barely noticed it was "Red01", the fact that I havn't been around BA for a few weeks and your new avatar confused me... I am getting old.

Another option is LSL riser bars. Above is a photo of them on my '83 GS750. The pictured fork tubes are 41mm Katana 750 units transplanted onto the '83 GS750. - I needed clip-ons that mounted below the top triple and had enough rise to clear the bodywork. They are very high quality bars.

Helibar also makes riser clip-ons but they are not as attractive.

Either can be found by way of Google.

on the G1 steering dampener, they make a top mount for about $430.(Brain fart keeps me from remebering th Brand name) But I mouned a cheaper(free) Dayona on my G1. It mounts on the right side fork behind the fairing. I had t drill a hole in the frame under the tank,for a mounting point. I have pics in one of my files. If I can persuade my daughter to help me,maybe she'll show me how to send them.

Thanks smooth, that would also be nice... I am working on getting my bike track ready over the winter and clipons and a damper were top on my list. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a lot of options for the 1G B12s.

Those look cool, thats the first B12 I have seen with clip-ons below the top triple. The clutch master cylinder actually clears below the gauges.

I agree with you on the transformation the bars make, the bike steers much better-countersteering is effortless.

Well, the bike is stripped, lost about 40lbs, and ready for the clipons and a stabilizer. I thought people might enjoy some before and after pictures.

Before.

2 Hours later, stripped, lean and mean. Land_shark flipped my handlebars over to give a relative feel of clipons on the bandit. They actually feel ok, can't wait to get some real clipons installed.
