Author Topic: shock mounting bolts removal, help! (Read 2836 times)

Hi All,

I'm having trouble loosening the mounting bolts of the Rear Shock of my B6. Either their just too tightly bolted, or I'm using the wrong kind of sockets/wrenches, and I'm starting to damage the heads of the bolts, torquing hard to loosen them. I'm mostly having trouble on the bottom mounting bolt.

Any specific tools, secrets or tricks to accomplish, which I thought, would be a simple task?

Gonna upgrade to a B12 shock.

elbandito: Spray some WD40 on them. Make sure you have the correct wrenches and/or sockets. Loosen the nut and not the bolt head. Be patient. If you can, take a brush and try and clean the threads.

Thanks so much for the tips. I'm going to attack them first thing, tomorrow morning.

When I torque to loosen the nut, it also moves the bolt, thus having difficulty unwinding the nut. I've held the bolt with another wrench, but still to no avail. I am definately going to use WD-40, and clean the threads with a brush. I'll let you know how I do.

Those bolts are very tight and have lock tight on them. Use a 1/2 in drive with a good quality socket. I had to really bear down on the bolts to loosen mine for my Hayabusa shock swap.
You may need to use a breaker bar to loosen the lock tite up.

What's a breaker bar, is it a cheater bar? I'm kinda of a newbie mechanic.

I didn't realize they had lock tight on them, is that basically a thread locker? I've been drenching it with WD-40, and no luck so far. I've been using a 3/8 drive with a socket, but am starting to round off the nut.

I'm going to keep giving it a try, and may use some flame to warm the nut, for it to expand, and to get some of the WD-40
to creep into the threads. I had no problem loosening the top mounting bolt.

Breaker bar:

Use a 1/2" drive with a 6-point socket to minimize slipping. Heat will help if it is really stubborn. An impact wrench (pneumatic, electric or even hammer driven) can also be a plus, too.
