Got some Suburban Machinery bars
« on: September 17, 2005, 05:56:15 AM »
I got some of the SV650 Type 2 bars.  I'm impressed with the overall quality of materials and construction.  They come predrilled for the headlight and kill switch controls.

I did run into a problem.  The bars are a little narrow and I had to remove my choke lever to get the clutch reservoir to fit between the headlight control and the speedometer.  It is wedged in there pretty good.  Also I'm not able to adjust the pitch angle of the bars because of clearance issues.

I wrote to SM and got the following response:

We will make a new bar to your specifications.

Please measure the location of your electrical switchgear holes.
Measure in from the end of your old handlebar.
We designate rotational position in either compass degrees or clock position.

For example, a .208" diameter hole in 167mm from the end of the bar, located at 25 degrees clock wise from straight up, or at 1:00 O'clock as viewed from the end of the bar.

We'll make the hand grips tubes or center tube as long as you wish.
Generally lengthening the center tube gives more room for the tach and speedo.  Some of our bars have center tubes up to 7.25" long. Yours is 6.1" long.

Also we can leave the switchgear holes not drilled and you can drill them where you want.

However with good info we can offer a Bandit specific bar for other owners.

I like my bars so much I haven't had the heart to take them off and send them back in yet.

Wow - that's pretty cool of them.  I have Type 1s on my B4 and LOVE them!  The SV hole on the right side isn't even close to where I needed it to be.  I just shaved the peg off the control and positioned it where I needed it.  The bolts give it plenty of clamping power.  I now have several thousand miles on them and the control hasn't shifted a bit.

I have Suburban Machinery bars on my '01 1200.  I they sent me what they thought would work.  I fit the bars on and had the same issue you ran into.  No clearance for the master cylinder:

In that pic (above), the throttle was off the bar 3/4 of an inch.

When I called them back, they offered to take the original's back and made me up a set custom.  I fit them a couple of weeks ago, and they work just fine now.  I think with the measurements I sent it, they should be good to go now with Bandit 1200 bars.  I posted some pics of my bike in another thread.  This pic shows the new bars, and another farther away shot so you can see the profile.  They are very agressive (especially with the corbin seat being lower), but that's how I like it (the riding, I mean  .  I had these on my old SV and loved them, so I could not bear to be without on my Bandit.

Now, I obviously have a smaller speedo/tach on there now.  I think the bars would be fine with the wider, larger stock clocks, but I'm not sure...

YMMV.  No doubt, the people at Suburban Machinery are tops.  :beers:

Barry....

Totally animal rig you've built there.  Bravo!

Who makes that single tach/speedo?

Thanks
Bill

Thanks, Bill!

I got my clocks from BanditMania (http://www.banditmania.co.uk/digital_clocks.htm)

Not too hard to fit, but the wiring is a bit of a pain inna arse.  I'm still sketchy on the speedo hookup, and the tach is very erratic.  I also had to chop the stock bracket up, and it still sticks out too far.

But it looks cool
