GS1200SS Front Suspenion ?
« on: February 18, 2006, 07:43:45 PM »
Hi
I have a 2004 GS1200SS.
It runs the 43mm forks that are only adjustable for preload.
So ,as I am totally ignorant of suspension, when I run the bike with a full tank of gas it seems to be alot smoother and comfortable on the front end.
Bearing that in mind how should I adjust my front end ?
More or less preload ?
Should I think about changing to oil ?
More or less/different oil weight ?
This is not a major problem as the std setting that it is on now are quite good.It is just that it seems so much better with the weight of a full tank of gas on it.What would this extra weight make you guys think as far as settings ?
Thanks
Richard

If you like it with a full tank, it's gonna get stiffer as it gets lighter, so try dialing it 1 click softer and see how you like that.

that sounds like good advice to me...im like you bstard ..i know what i like but not sure how to adjust it sometimes.but ther e is the odd self designated expert in the group i ride with and due to the variety of roads her in nz ,softer settings seem to be the go,some of the hard settings ive seen people on this sit suggest ,you wouldnt be able to ride auckland to thames without getting flicked off.   slo

Hi
Thats what I found as well.I did highway27 down to Tuapo on sat morning.
3hrs to get there then 10hrs of hot sun and drag racing at the new track.
So the run back home was real hard.Still only took 3 hrs but I had to stop 3 times just to clean the bugs off the visor. They were that thick.
Anyway during the run back I made an effort to try and feel the difference in handling between a full tank and an almost empty one.
Definitely felt smoother and less jarring with a full tank of gas.
So I will back the preload of a notch and when I get new tires on it I will try and do some more test.

p.s ...can second at the drag meeting.
