Shinko V. Dulop Qualifier V. Michelin Pilot Power
« on: August 15, 2006, 08:27:55 PM »
Looking to finally replace the stock Macadams on my 03 Nekked B12 and am torn between these three.

Shinko Radial Raven 009,  Dunlop Qualifier and Michelin Pilot Power

I am leaning towards the Shinko's simply because of the price. I ride rather conservatively and would need a tire mostly for commuter-type riding and sometimes with a passenger. I do get up into the canyons semi-regularly but even then don't really push it too much.

I am posting because, yes I have read the Tire here in our little alley here and STILL can't decide what to do. As much as I would like to spend as little money as possible I am really trying to resist the urge to cheap out on this.

You guys seems smart. What do you suggest?

You should check out the thread that is devoted to tire opinions first.

That being said...

I would rate quality this way:

1.  Michelin
2.  Shinko
3.  Dunlops

Best bang for the buck?

1.  Skinko
2.  Michelin
3.  Dunlops.

You're kind of comparing apples and oranges.  The Michelin is a sport tire, the Shinko is a sport touring with emphasis on touring.

I would also consider the Pirelli Diablo Stradas and Metzler Z6's as top quality sport touring tires.

Having read all those threads about who likes what tire and for why is the reason I ended up posting in the first place. I get the feeling that tires are like oil - you like what you like and for your own reasons.

Thanks for the response. You did provide me some very useful info about the Shinkos. A sport touring tire with empahsis on touring is pretty much what I was looking for. I was willing to sacrifice tread life for traction but and go with the Dunlops but those Shinkos are so damn affordable. ( By the by, AZMotorsports/Ridenow is having a special on Shinkos AND Michelin Pilot Powers.)

Thanks again Paul,

Could you post a link to the Michelin special, the only price I could find was $180 for a rear. Anything below about $240 a set is good.

Bike bandit.com has dunlops for 228 shipped if you are an ama member. The $40 a year membership pays for itself after a few purchases.
I'm really diggin the qualifiers, nothing but a thumbs up from me.

Thats about right, the Dunlop's average about $20 less for a set vs the Michelin's.

I would have no problem using the Qualifier as my 208ZR experiences have been good. But after mounting Powers on my 900SS, I am convinced the Michelin's are better sport tires. I try not to push the SS too hard as the bike is cherry and a mishap would be very expensive, but I find myself riding harder than expected due to the confidence the Michelin's inspire. They are simply flawless.

Also my reasons for wanting to put them on the B12 are:

They have a pronounced V shape- this should help quicken the transition to full lean.

They are offered in a 120/65 front- I want to try this size to quicken up the steering a bit.

Either way, you can't go wrong.

Then again if ya want a sports tyre, try the shinko 005, and if that ain't sporty enough for you, the 003 is drag racing material. I've tried the 005 heaps of stick, but I do prefer the 009 for the extra mileage.

Hey Mick save your breath on these guys! It was said to me last night!!! When has Stinko's won anything!!! Well they won me over!! I ordered a set of 009's for the Busa, which is 7 lbs more in weight than the Bandit and a measly 73 or so HP more! the BT56 rear has maybe another 1k in it with 2700 on the odometer now! No they won't be tested @ 180 or even close. What do ya think?? Any in your area run em on the hyper bikes???    :?:  :beers:

Hey Snow! Jeez is there a place to buy these with out taking out a loan @ the?? That is just my problem with other than the Skinko's from tha site Ridnow! I got a set to my door for $168.00 190&120x17!!! They should be as good on my Busa as they were on my Bandit! Not much diff the way i ride. And the stinko's were way better in the wet than any of the others. I hope to test em on the twisty roads around Asheville area soon! :bigok:  :bigok:

I put a set of Michelin Pilot Roads on my B6S about a month ago.  I like to lean as much as the next guy.  My dealer (that I trust) said that the Pilot Road would get about 2x the mileage of the Pilot Power.  Yes, they're not quite as sticky, but I'm not riding a Gixxer either.  They're plenty sticky for me!  And, they were less expensive too.  Great tires!  If you don't mind the fact that you'll probably only get 3k out of a set of Pilot Power tires, the price is excellent.  For the price, the Dunlop 208's were a GREAT deal!

Thanks for all the info and opinions guys.

I just read some good stuff about the Dunlop's in  "Motorcyclist" - they named the Dunlop Qualifier as their product of the year. Which got me to thinking. That doesn't change how I will be using the tire, which is mainly commuting type riding, but ever since my accident last Oct.(while commuting) I am really interested in traction - longevity be damned.

But then again.... those damn Shinkos are so freaking affordable. I hate being cheap but its just in my blood.
