Speedometer jumping?
« on: July 15, 2007, 08:02:56 PM »
I have a 97 B12, recently on the highway the speedometer jumps from 70 MPH to 85.   Does anyone have any idea what could cause this?

Your wrist?!  Someone was gonna say it, it might as well have been me.

On my DR 650, I had taken the bars off to check the torque on the "big nut".  Apparantly when I put it all back together, I did something slightly wrong because when I would turn the bars, the engine would rev up.  Talk about an eye opener!  Point being, have you recently did some maintenance that may have caused this?

Ha ha, no I don't think it's my wrist or recent maintenance.
It's like the speedo get's stuck at 70 and if I get the bike up to 85 the speedo jumps to 85.  If I gradually slow down I still can't get it to indicate a steady 80 MPH.  I remember having similar problems with the speedo on my 81 GS1000, but I don't think I ever fixed it as that bike had many more important problems than that.

Sounds like it's time to lube the speedo cable.  :bandit:

It may be past the point of lube...

1. Lube the cable first
2. Plan to replace the cable when the lube doesn't work.
