gen 2 fairing transplant onto a gen 1 bike?
« on: June 17, 2010, 06:13:29 PM »
Has anyone attempted to put a second generation fairing onto a '95-'99 model? I love the looks of the 2nd gen ('00-'04) and if heavy modification isn't required would be something I would like to put onto the '97. I can wrench around a bit myself but it would have to be pretty basic stuff. I would have to assume its not a straight replacement (wouldn't that be nice) but if its not too technical I may actually survive it.

At 1st glance I see that the furthest back mount for my current fairing is bolted to the frame and offset a bit, and that the rest seems to be bolted onto a central bracket that extends from the center of the forks for the headlamp assembly.

I've seen it done by a guy over at Max-Suz that runs a 1G with a sidehack.  (I haven't been over there in a few years, so I don't recall his screen name.)  The 2G rear fairing mounts to brackets that attach to the frame instead of directly to the frame, so if you can fab up something there, that's probably how it's done.  Since the tank & frame lines are different between the 1G & 2G, the 2G fairing on a 1G doesn't blend together as well as it does on the parent.  Also, be prepared to modify the 2G headlights (there are the threads here) to have as good a night vision as the 1G has.

There is a standoff bracket on the 1g, but sadly everything else looks as though its using the headlamp assemble as the basis for attachment. This is probably past my skill sadly.

There is some previous damage to this fairing so I'll probably just collect the parts necessary to redo it myself over time with the same 1g. There is a bit of a dent in the black 'dash' portion against the windshield from the inside and a vibration at about 1500-1800 rpm that I think I can see where its coming from but will have to pull apart this winter to know for sure. I've stuffed some foam padding into the area and its dampened the noise for the time being to the point where its not driving me nuts.

You can sort of see the gash like dent here:

Also the fairing seens a little pushed back when you look at the lights in comparison to the rubber gasket. Though this isnt as important to me as I will probably be doing something different here, creating a washer big enough to fill the hole from behind and installing something like these http://tinyurl.com/26xlpty
