Hey all, I'm in the process of buying a 2003 B12 with 60k miles on it. Asking price on craigslist was 2750. Guy told me he'd sell it for 2200 if I replaced the chain and sprocket myself (the chain has a tight spot, I rode it and couldn't tell, but he had a 38 tooth rear sprocket so I'd want to replace it anyway)
Bike's in good shape, never been down, he has maintenance records. Changed the oil every 3k miles and valve adjustments up to 32k miles (none since)
Been used as a commuter its entire life (100 mile ride to work every day)
Honestly for 2200 it looked like a good deal.
Anyway, was going to pick it up today. Just ordered the chain and sprocket last night when I get a call from him saying that he was changing the oil for me (something he's done 20 times) but managed to over torque the drain bolt plug and strip it. Now it leaks at a rate of 1 drop every 15-20 minutes while it's running.
He said that he'd sell it for me $1900 as is, or he can fix it and deliver it to me for $2200 (lives 3 hours away)
I decided I'd rather fix it myself, so offered him $2000 as is and delivered.
Smart idea? I have a mechanic friend that can help me fix whatever...should I bother with a new pan or should I get a helicoil insert and call it a day?
