Taller Windshield for 1250? HELP!

The best write up is this one.....CLICK ON THIS

The only issue I had was those little rubber nut thingys popping out. Here is a picture - there are 4 of these holding the window in place.

All in all, it took 30 minutes including all the photos and taking my time as I was paranoid I would break my new toy.

Great shield - buy one.

Hi Al here, new to the forum. I bought my 1250S in may and have enjoyed it immensely all summer. I just installed a PowerBronze shield and have a few comments:
I'm 5'11" and with the stocker shield was buffeted quite a lot around  my head, gets tiring after a couple of hours. The PowerBronze is 2" taller and not as streamlined, directs most of the blast above my head, in fact If I adopt a racing stance it
misses me entirely. I like the looks of it, but that Givi shield probably would have worked better............oh well !  :duh:

Thanks, gentlemen ! Yeah, I found the shield on Flea Bay for
$80 CDN  http://stores.ebay.ca/The-Superbike-Store-LLC

I'd get way more protection from the Givi, but I likes the look of the PowerBronze.....  Also available in clear.

I've just ordered an MRA Vario shield so will be following ZenMans instructions in the FAQ on installing it.

A question for Zen though - do you find that the handguards affect the airflow? I am toying with fitting grip heaters now that the weather is starting to cool but the handguards might keep the chill wind off enough and might have other benefits in terms of keeping a little of the rain off (along with the better screen). What do you think?

D, you made a good choice on the Vario, I think you'll be pleased.  :congrats:

As for the handguards, I highly recommend them. They afford a lot more protection than just the hands... in fact, they seem to work perfectly with the fairing and windscreen to expand the entire "bubble" of reduced wind pressure. When we had the extreme heat-wave a few weeks ago, I rode in a T-shirt quite a bit, and I found my arms were protected all the way up past my elbows.

Getting off-topic just a bit, how is the lower fairing working out for you? I'm thinking seriously of ordering one ($464.95 US) and I do like the look, but I'm hoping it will add a bit of protection for that kind of money. I'm also concerned about any heat issues... what are your impressions?

Thanks Zen. Maybe I'll give the handguards a try too.

As for the lower fairing, I can't say that I've ridden the bike without it though I did put in a few miles on the demo bike. I don't think it makes much difference for weather protection since it is a fairly close fit to the bike. I bought it essentially to keep muck off the engine and thus easier to clean and less prone to corrosion. However, I haven't put the bike through a winter yet to know where the water and mud ends up. I did fit a fenda extenda to keep road spray off the down pipes. I think that helps.

I've not noticed any heat issues. When caught in stationary traffic, the fan tends to cut in a lot and sometimes you feel some warmish air wafting over the legs but it's not objectionable and some bikes are far worse. Keep the bike moving and there's no problem. I thought that the fan cutting in was due to the fairing and my radiator guard but I'm told that the fan cuts in a lot anyway due to the small rad which is believable.

My previous bike was an FJR where the fairing stuck out a lot more and gave better protection in the winter. The downside is that you don't get so much cooling air over your body in the summer. So, to me, the fairing looks good and keeps the bike a bit cleaner but don't expect it to give the sort of weather protection that something like a BMW RT or Gold Wing gives.

The biggest issue for me at the moment is the screen. My visor and shoulders get plastered in dead insects and I'm hoping that the air flow will take them higher over my head. If that works, the wind and rain should follow the same path. I'll let you know how I get on. While I'm fitting the screen, I'll wire in my Stebel horn as well.

Thanks. I think you are right about the fan, mine comes on often even without the fairing, mostly when I'm stopped or just coasting in a parking lot. I like the way the lower fairing makes the bike look more like a sport-tourer, and if there's no real detriment then I'll probably order one.

If you order the handguards, make sure you get the ones for the DL650... the DL1000 ones don't come with the hardware you'll need. And don't let the dealer tell you they won't fit.... they do. Promise.

Thanks again Zen. You say about 20 minutes to fit the handguards. May I assume that this does not involve removing the existing grips?
