Tire install w/o weights??????

Has anyone ever seen a tire installed w/o balancing weights? I know that the weights are usually clipped to the centre ridge, or stuck on is used.

I recently got both tires changed and notice a small wobble in the front. After reading a few threads I've come to the conclusion that I'm going to have to live with it as AVON s45 (or 46 whatever is FR) does not have a striaght centre line. However, recently while washing the beast I noticed that there were no weights on the front rim. I saw where there once was a stick on weight but all that remains is the foam goop.

Would this accentuate the wobble? It's really only noticable when I use 1 hand or let go of the bars.

Sticky subject for sure.....   out of balance tires can cause front end wobble but then again so many other things can too.  If you really are concerned have it rebalanced - very cheap solution and quick feedback too.  You can check your steering head bearings, tire pressure, on & on but maybe you actually got a dealer/mounter that paid attention and due to some cosmic force you just don't need weights.  

You might be the first though.... post up and let us know what you find out.  :beers:  :motorsmile:  :motorsmile:

yeah, it's practically impossible that the wheel would be perfectly balanced or not need a weight. When I got my front changed not long ago, the weight is 1/3rd way round the rim & about half the weight. It probably just came off, if you pull the rim and take it to them surely they'd fix it up for you. :beers:

PSI is the biggest cause of the wobble. If you don't get it rite, now, it will become tank slapping down the road. I had conti roads that got so bad i couldn't wait for it to wear out. Try running the max the tire says on the side wall. :duh:  :beers:

Not true, I work a an auto tire dealer and install about 100 tires a day.  You'd be suprised to see how many don't need weight.  I could see it being more prevalent on cycle tires also due to them being narrow and light.

2 Bikes, and only 1 weight on 1 wheel.
Seems to me, as I fit and balance my own these days, that some tyres need more balancing than others. Since switching to shinko tyres, I have not had to weight those wheels. So having said that the only wheel not fitted with a shinko is the one still needing a weight.
Go figure that out.
On the B6 3xRear and the mileage i'm getting can not be to far out on my balance.
B6 front x1 over 20 thosand k's still very usable, no wobbles, again can not be to far out on my balance.
ZRX rearx2 again great mileage.
Foot loose and fancy free.
Looking for adventure and what ever comes our way.

I'll take it in this week and find out. If it truely does not require a weight then I'll ask they didn't celan the foam off from the previous weights....3 bikes from teh same dealer...they better give me top service.

While in the Air Force, i worked at a uniroyal tire store 4 a few years!  (Too much info????) (BTW @ Homestead) 70 thru 77 on and off tdy's :taz:  :wtf:   :soapbox: Anyway unless its a recapped crappy any tire can be mounted to not need tire weights!!! but takes some time to do! Turning it on the rim until the lite spots of wheel & tire canceal each other out! I would piss the owner off by doing this for buds that came in. The prob is all that can change as soon as the tire seats from rolling the first 5 miles!! :roll: :beers:  :monkeymoon:  :bigok:  :?:  :duh:

Bet you didn't mount many big 4x4 mud tires then!  :wink:

I'd like to see you balance a set of 44" Super Swampers with no weights of any kind!  :tongue:

They usually take so much weight you have to use patch weights inside the tire beacause you can't put that much lead in one spot on the rim.

i don't have weights on the rear with the factory tire or stradas i just bought, no rear balance problems at all

Same here had a new Z6 fitted on the rear and the fitter told me that it didn't need any weights on it, He said it was due to better made tyres i got to admit i thought he was bulls**ting me but i've had it up to 145 and no vibe' or wobble.

Of course it's pretty much pointless to balance tires that big, they will never ride good...

Dont ask how I know this stuff. Some companines do the following BS, some dont.  God help the consumer when trying to buy a second set of tires.

On most steel car wheels, the wheel manufacture measures the out of round of the wheel and marks the low spot.  The tire is pre marked with a red dot indicating the high spot of the tire.  When mounting, aligning these two marks cancels out some out of round. Better ride and can lower the amount of weight used (not eliminate, dynamic balance still needs met).

Some aluminum wheels (for cars) are intentionaly made out of round so that the same thing can be done.

Car tires are also marked for coneicity, meaning this tire pulls to the left, so match it with a tire on the same axle that pulls to the right (blue stripes on the tread).  Car goes straight down the road.

Any stupid stuff like this on bikes?
