I have a question in regards to this thread about putting V-Strom handguards on a 1200S...

I want to do this before the cold hits here. I'm ready to order the parts, but I wanted to throw in this quirk for an opinion...I have Helibars on my bike. Is there any reason this would prevent me from putting on the V-Strom guards? Also, do I get to keep my bar-end weights (the stock ones)?

My ordering finger is twitchy! Help me!

I only had small problems fitting the hand guard to the right side (B6) and ordered a DR handguard for the left hand side (cable actuated clutch on the B6). Nothing a little heat or cut couldn't fix. The DL hand guards do not attch to the bar end. They are for wind deflection only. They are not brush guards.

I put V-Strom handguards on my 1200 Bandit, later removing them to fit a larger windshield which got in the way.

There are two series of handguards from the V-Strom, the fittings are a bit different and I don't know of the latest 2005 offerings will fit.

You'll need new parts galore -- the handguards will need a bit ot trimming on the right side to clear the brake master cylinder, but it's any easy fix.

New pivot bolts for the clutch and brake levers are needed along with screws and washers to hold the guards in place. A search of the parts fiche at <www.ronayers.com> will get the part numbers for everything -- look at both early and late model V-Strom 1000s as the 650s don't offer guards.

All in all a good project -- probably will cost about $80 or so after all the parts are in place. No connection to the handlebar ends so the weights aren't affected.

Check the archived messages from a while back -- I listed the part numbers and Ron Ayers prices for the conversion. I don't remember the exact date, but it was over a year ago.

Ray - most everything on the board from before about Feb (or was it March) '05 is gone. Maybe if Herb does it, he'll replenish the knowledge base here.

OK, I've ordered everything on Ray's list. Woo hoo! (I assumed my Helibars wouldn't screw up the installation since no one said anything.)

Now, I have a few bucks to throw at the Bandit. I was thinking Holeshot's steering damper and front fender extension. Seems like a couple of the more useful and easily installed options. Good choices?

I've got the Fenda Extenda and I'm pleased with it.
(I bought it from NWS in the UK when I ordered my footpeg jackup plates since their price was cheaper than Dale's)

It helps keep the front of the motor clean, but it would work better if it was even longer.

I didn't like the idea of drilling my fender to mount it though, so I bonded it on.

forget the vstrom ones i found these on a triumph board. the guys mounted them on to there speed triples. the bolt right on to the handlebar. look nice in the pics on the www.triumphrat.net board. here is a pic of them

For those of you doing Ray's modification, one part number is wrong. Suzuki just called me about my order and said the part number for the left knuckle cover is actually 57541-06G00-019, instead of ...-015.

Just an FYI. Small detail that they'll catch anyway, but thought I'd mention it.

OK, I got my V-Strom parts today. The left side was a simple 1 minute swap. The right side took me 20 minutes or so of careful clipping and shaving an edge with a razor blade to make it fit. Very simple. No problem. Just a bit of patience.

I looks factory and I can't wait to try 'em out in the AM!

Thanks very much, Ray, for the idea for this mod and the parts list. Made it all just WAY too easy! Parts were $98.79 including tax from the dealer. You can beat that at Ron Ayers by several dollars, depending on what shipping costs you.

Here's some pics to give anyone interested an idea of how they look. Sorry, garage isn't well lit.

Addendum: Seemed to make a difference this morning. The colder it gets the better the "test" will be. It was 50ish this AM, so whether these will save me the whole tingly frostbite thing remains to be seen. I bet they will. And they don't interfere or touch my gloved hands at all. I thought that might have been an issue, but wasn't.

These do look nice, by the way. My only reservation would be bolting them to my Helibars. Mounting them would mar the gloss black finish on the Helibars, which I'd rather not do. But I guess if you were putting them on the stock chrome handlebars it wouldn't matter any.

Why does it need to be VStom guards? There are hundreds of aftermarket handguards out there.

I don't know. V-Strom guards were recommened at this board. So that's the way I went. I'm sure there's hundreds of other ways to go; I just wasn't aware of any better option.

By the way, they attach to the lever pivot screws, rather than to the handlebar, which is good, it seems to me.

Looks to me like they mount to the master cylinders/levers.

Doesn't have to be, but the Strom ones give a factory look and as you can see from the post, at least one of them is a perfect fit and the other doesn't take much to make fit.
