As a former resident of Boone, NC I had the opportunity to ride in some of the best areas our state and the east coast has to offer. I always heard of the "Dragon" and have ridden it and had a great time but wondered if any of you have ever ridden hwy 421 between Mt. City, TN and Bristol, TN? (called Shady Valley)From the Mt. City side it is about maybe 15 miles of beautiful asphalt, dragon's back type turns and switchbacks and best of all very little traffic. It was to me the best road i have ever ridden on, very smooth, very few blind corners, and because of it being part of a park a very well kept road. i advise you all to check it out because you wouldn't be dissappointed.           PS...up until a few years ago even the law wouldn't bother you much as long as you didn't endanger any one else and refrained from the wheelies.

I ride up there every chance I get, i live about 30-45 min. from boone, so it's not that far from me. I try not to publicly announce it for fear of more squidly types appearing there. Riding from here, just riding the backroads getting there through west jefferson and in to tenn. is 3/4 of the fun. But I do love some shady.
I dunno where tobaccoville is, but if it's close we should get together and ride sometime.

How about 88 from Trade to West Jefferson?
You ever ride that road?

Trade is the intersection of 88 (67) and 421.
How about 194 north out of Boone to it's intersection with 221 just south
of West Jefferson? Ever ride that or 321 along Watauga Lake?
Or 90 from Lenoir north and west up to the BRP?
133 from Shady Valley to Damascus? And 58 from Mouth of Wilson to Damascus is one of my all-time favorites.  I love those roads in that area
and have plans to ride those and others the last week in April 2006.

Those and the roads in the Spruce Pine, Bakersville, Erwin area are
outstanding. Less traffic and just as good as The Dragon.

Yeah i have run 194, 221 is one of my favorites. I run up 16 to 58 over to damascus, then down 133 to shady then back to blowing rock jump down 221 to 181 then 18 to lenoir and i live just below lenoir. That makes a good day's ride right there.

88 is a fun road, has a few decreasing radius corners that mess with me everytime I go. Any time you are gonna be up this way let me know, if I'm off work i'll be glad to meet up with ya. I would say we have met before but it was only briefly. You had just arrived at BOSS last year and I had to head home about the same time.

I have heard of more good roads out toward mt airy which is almost directly below meadows of dan in nc. I haven't had a chance to check them out yet, but that's on my list for this season.

Tobaccoville is in the Winston-Salem area, just on the north side. There are good roads all over this area. If you areever in the W-S area drop me a line and we'll get up and i'll show you the good ones I know. Is shady still as good as i remember it? Its been about 1 1/2 years sine ive been there.

Will do man.
Shady is still awesome, carol and peggy sold the store to a biker couple from florida about a month ago. I have been wanting to get up there and meet them and see if they are gonna ruin it or not, but the weather won't hold out long enough. Somedays its great here but that still leaves the weather of boone and shady to contend with.

Anytime your up this way let me know and we'll get up and ride.
