jetting needed with b12 end can?
« on: January 07, 2006, 08:14:55 AM »
hi folks,

I just bought an '03 1200S and am thinking of getting an end can for it as I've read that just a can will get the torque output up over 80 ft.lbs. My question to all you Banditos out there is will I require carb jetting with this mod? Two Brothers exhaust lists dyno charts of their slip on without jetting, and the chart seems to imply it isn't needed. Does anyone have experience with this?

I would jet it.  Bandits are lean from the factory and a free flowing can will aggravate that.
There are no stupid questions,  only stupid people asking questions!

ah, I see. thanks for the reply.

while we're on the jetting topic, do you know approximately what jetting a Bandit costs? I'm not looking for huge power here, so just a stage 1 kit would do, and I'd have a shop do it as I am no mechanic.

You can get away without jetting it, but it runs SOOOO much better if you re-jet. Everyone that's ever run just a slip-on and later re-jetted kicks themselves in the butt for waiting.

The two kits that get the best reviews here and on any other Bandit board are Holeshot (Stage 1 will run you $128 and includes a timing advancer) and Ivan's Performance (his only 2G B12 kit is $130 and includes new needles - timing advancer not recommended with his setup).

Unfortunately, you just missed Ivan's Holiday sale. He was offering 15% off his kit, or 1/2 price if you bought it with a slip-on.

It'll cost you about the same to have either kit installed. I think Ivan's kit will produce more power than Holeshot's Stage 1, and is pretty close to Holeshot's Stage 2 Airbox kit.

Factory-Pro also offers a good product, but for some reason, it's not as popular as Holeshot or Ivan's.

Dynojet also offers a kit, but their Bandit kits don't get good reviews. They seem to be difficult to get dialed in. K&N offers (or offered?) a jet kit that is Dynojet's kit in K&N packaging.

I personally think that is a bit over rated.  I believe that the stock torque is about 72 ft lbs of torque and when I did my pipe and stage 1 jet kit, I got 76.8 ft lbs of torque.

I have a Yoshi TRS race can with Ivan's kit on mine and I can't emphasize what a difference it is from stock.

Would I ever go back?

Nope!

I too, had my bandit with a slip on and shimmed needles for a while before I got an Ivans kit.  Once I installed the Ivans jet kit, I was kicking myself for spending money on Givi bags and other Farkle before getting the kit.  It should have been my first "add on".

Here's the adjustments I made on my 2003 GSF1200SK3:
Stock carbs with scorpion can just made it louder. Huge hole in power curve, so I put in a K/N airfilter. Then the bike ran like really bad. Too much air and not enough fuel.

Rejetted-110 mains/shimmed needles .05mm/airscrew 3.5 turns out
This bike runs perfect now. Super strong!!!

i have Ivans kit and what i thought was odd was that the mains only go up slightly but the new needles are like 1/2 the diameter as the stock ones lol much more flow . when i saw those i said to myself there is NO WAY this can be right .i installed them as per the instructions and couldnt believe the difference it made, WOW! once you try a well thought out jet kit you will wonder what took yourself so long  .there is no way you would regret purchasing a jet kit .i now only use the choke for starting ,as soon as it starts i can shut the choke completely off and ride away with 0 stumbles or lurching.i used to have a 5-7 min warmup time.jfyi .
