Strange wear in the rear tire
« on: September 05, 2006, 04:09:47 PM »
Hi everybody!
[Hi Dr. Nick!]

ehh, seriously. I'm seeing on my rear tire some cracks.  Random cracks in the midsection of the tire profile. It's strange because some are horizontal and other are diagonal, but none are vertical, like one would suspect.
The tire itself, well it's unsure how many km's has been done on it, but the tire feels 'grippy' and they're not slicks, not at all!

I'm hinting the tires might be old? But that's an wild assumption.

The tire is a Dunlop D205.

Thanks in advance!
Alex

Check the date code.  I cant think of anything other than age that would cause a tire to crack, unless its been run flat, which i doubt on a bike.  As I understand it the D205s were discontinued and as a result alot of old(er) tires are on the market.  My friend runs them on his 750 katana and they are doing strange things too.
I used to think the brain was the most fascinating organ in the body.  Then I thought, 'well sure, look who's telling me that.'

The 205 is an old tire. Probably dry rot.

:thanks:  Strange things happening eh?
Like taking a corner and having the sensation the tire lost traction for a sec?

Hmm, expenses, always expenses.. When is this bike going to get me some money?

One thing about bike tires (especially sport bike tires) is that they use a pretty soft compound of rubber. Rubber will always harden with age and I think this is what you are seeing here. This will vary from manufacturers due to the different recipe's they all use.

A couple words of advice.

Always check the date code when buying tires.

Always check the expiry date on condoms!

I didn't know it was this apparent.. Last year i could have sworn i didn't see any cracks..
But yeah it's prolly time to change the tire.

Serial number on condoms???  I've never seen a serial number, but here in New Zealand they have written in bold " Welcome to the land of the long white cloud" from base to tip.   :toofunny:
