Fairing R&R 2nd Gen B-12S
« on: April 29, 2007, 09:14:32 PM »
How much Trub?     How much trouble is it to remove/replace the fairing on a 2nd Gen B-12S?

Reason for the ? is: the mounting brackets on mine are misaligned making the nose of the fairing point slightly, maybe 3 to 5 degrees left of the centerline of the bike. Where the fairing meets the side of the tank on the right side, there is virtually zero gap while on the left side there is over 1/4 inch of gap.  I've got a Haynes Manual, no Zuke manual and no Clymer.  Tools not an issue. Experience as a wrench, not an issue. Just wondering if anyone has done the job of R&R the fairing on a 2GenB12S and knows some tips they can give me.   Thanx.

Bill Blades web site has a good starter for you and details the hardest part(where you will break something).  The rest you can figure out.http://www.billsbikesnservice.com/ws.htm

Thanx Turbo.  I've got a D&D as well. I expected it would be louder and since I don't like noise, I'm pleased with how it sounds.   I'll bkmk that site you gave me. I'm booked solid today, but later in the week, I need to tackle that fairing.

Thanx again,

I don't think I've noticed one that had a perfect fitting fairing, but then I haven't really make an effort in that area.

Given the multitude of pieces and how they fasten, it seems to me this is a given. It may be in the fairing's frame attachment (or a slight tweak), but just as likely is an accumulation of tolerances in pieces and one side has accumulated more than the other.

Is the center of your headlight off, or just the rear ends of the plastic? Knowing this may help a little in pinpointing where you need to adjust.

Turbo:
That site gave me info on changing out a windshield... good info, but what I need is to R&R the entire fairing....  Thanx anyway.

Paul:
From the front, the headlight assembly is NOT aligned with the centerline of the bike. With the bike on center stand, viewed from10' behind the bike, the right side mirror is about 1" higher than the left side mirror. The instrument cluster is visibly lower on the left than on the right looking from behind the bike.    I am convinced the mounting brackets are misaligned causing the fairing to be off center axially and rotated slightly to the left.

The bike runs true, all systems function perfectly, and there's power a-plenty.  It's just that the tupperware up front is yawed and in a slight bank.

I've got a Haynes manual. I've not had time to examine it, however.

Thanx for the help.

To get to all the fasteners, you'll need to follow the instructions for the windscreen removal just to get to all the fasteners. From what you describe, I'd start by removing the plastic so you can see the framework and make sure it's mounted right and work from there.

Before you go to all the trouble of removing the fairing you might check the alignment of the gas tank at the front edge....  sometimes that makes the fairing look crooked.

Just a thought...

Well, that was insightful!  Sometimes the solution depends on how you identify the problem.

Or my "chronically lazy" alternative... LET IT BE...  It doesn't shake, rattle or vibrate... maybe letting it be is best, but it is annoying.   Thanx for the helpful thoughts folks.

Working from my memory (and no, Jake, I'm not gonna walk out to the parking lot to refresh my memory!), the plastic tabs on the painted fairings connect to the plastic tabs on the black fairing, whicc connects to metal places on the frame.

The metal might need to be slightly bent, or it could be the interaction between plastic places, so you can loosen the hex bolts and give it all a gentle jiggle (but that plastic can easily break!) and see if you can get it to a place where it pleases you visually.

But as you say, it's not really a problem, so the "fix" isn't critical.

For what it's worth,  if you do take it apart you will almost surely break it at the windshield removal stage (I did).  From there you can figure it out as that is the only real hidden gotcha.  Cost me $30 on Ebay.  Not steering you wrong, trying to save you some hassle.

OKBandit:   Thanx for the heads up.  I had an 01 Bandit in 01 for a couple years. I was able to R&R the WS without breaking anything then, but I've gotten old and clumsy... what's a kid of 76 doing with a Bandit anyway I ask myself... Oh well, the first one intimidated me with it's power and love for tight twisting roads... no such roads over here in the piney woods of East Texas, but this one really wants to go fast too... so far so good in terms of my being in control and not giving in to the constant urging for more juice...  As long as I keep the "chicken stripes" from 3/4" to 1" wide, I think I'll be OK...

Thanx to all who have offered input.
