Hey guys. Thanks for the clutch advice. Hoping you can help me with this one too. I installed a vance and hines bolt on based on the directions they provided a week ago or so. Today I was at the a local shop getting the clutch and the rejetting done and noticed there was an air leak where the muffler was bolted on

I first figured it must mean I need a gasket, but then the mechanic thought there was an extra flange from the stock muffler that was not removed during installation of the muffler. We took the muffler off and took a look. Based on the size of the the three cap screws that they provided with the muffler it does appear the flange attached to the the stock pipe should have been removed to ensure adequate threading of the screws (as is it is probably only attached by two or three threads) . We attempted to pop off the flange but it would not budge. We are letting it sit over night after spraying with carb cleaner. Anyone install a bolt on know if that flange should come off? If so any hints on how to get it off?

This reminds me of horror stories from buyers on ebay. I'm interested in your delema not only to help fix it, but to find out how or why folks get to this point!! First off the Vance & hines will only have about 3 full threads in their steel flanges of their bolt-ons. Sealing exhaust flanges by torquing the Pajesus out of it won't help! If you use the old exhaust seal the best thing i've found is silicone (hi temp is best) but any will work. Not much is needed, let it set for an hour or more if you can. Works every time! It would be nice to know what bike, and what flange are you and your mechanic trying to remove? the thick part is the actual welded on flange! the thin chrome looking skin is just that, on a B12 and most. I sell exhaust on ebay, you wouldn't believe what i've been through!!! Hope this helps. Oh & I hope this mechanic of your isn't getting a bunch of $$ for this!!

It was on my 98 B12. We left the flange on. It did not look welded and Vance and Hines told us we should take it off or it would leak, but we left it anyway and used longer bolts and heat resistant sealant. Thanks for your help. By the way he did not charge me any money since I already was paying for the new clutch and jetting. Thanks again

Hello again! i sure would like to see that flange? sounds like a Wileyco exhaust systems, their adaptor will fit almost anything!! The stock b12 has a stainless outer skin no more than 1/32" thick, then the flange that is welded to the actual inside pipe of the midpipe 3/16" I question this because i have had folks say they have a stock item and exhaust won't fit when it wasn't a stock item but they were told it was! no biggie the main thing is its on, you like it, the 98 bandit is a great bike! I have 30k on mine and will go for another 30 with a little care. Take care.
