Clutch Very stiff, new clutch kit or what???
« on: February 23, 2007, 05:54:04 PM »
I have a 92 gsxr 750 motor in my 1996 B6.  The motor sounds great but the clutch is extremely stiff.  It feels like one of those forearm evercisers that you squeeze.  Will a new clutch kit fix this problem or is it something else?

Any suggetions?

Thanks,
Pete

If it is not a hydralic clutch, have you lubed the cable lately? They should be lubed every so often. Also check for a fread cable. Also checked for a pinched cable.

If it is hydralic, then it could be the master cylinder or slave cylinder sticking.

If it is neither of those, then I would look in to the clutch it self.

The cable is good.  Moves freely and is in good condition.  I think it is a problem with the clutch itself, I just don't know if a clutch kit with new springs will solve the problem.  theres only one way to find out I guess.

Has it always been this way, or has it recently started to get stiff? If it's always been this way, perhaps the motor has a aftermarket set of clutch springs. If it has recently started to get stiffer, I'd be looking into the mechanism for problems. If the cable is free, perhaps the rod is bent or the pivot arm is gunked up.

I bought the motor off ebay and it was this way when I got it.  It runs great, but the clutch makes it tough on the forearms.  I need to pull it apart and take a look.  I need to do some research but is there anything else, besides the clutch (i.e. tranny), that could be causing this??

Not really. It's either stiff because something's wrong, or the springs are heavier duty. If you still have the B6 motor, you could try mixing some parts and see if anything improves.

+1 with what Paul said. I would check the release mechanism and push rod (as you say you already checked the cable). Make sure the rod is completely straight, and clean and lube the mechanism. If that's all good, then you likely have stiffer clutch spings installed.

Sorry, I could not respond soon the site has been down. But it looks like the other have sent you in the right direction. My bet is either the springs or the release mechanism. I have seen were this part (#18 in the picture)

Has gone bad and caused a clutch to be hard.
