Boring out 600
« on: March 22, 2009, 08:41:45 PM »
Does anyone know of any 2GB6's that have been bored out and what they were bored out to?

What is the OEM bore on the 600? I/m sure the info for original bore is on the site somewhere but I might as well ask while I'm posting...
A boat's a boat, Lois, but the mystery box could be anything. It could even be a boat!  You know how much we've wanted one of those..!

Rember that time we got the mystery box instead of the boat?

Peter, that was 5 minutes ago!

Stock bore is 62.6mm
The 2005-2006 air/oil cooled 650 is 65.7mm (and has the same 48.7mm stroke as the 600).

Most folks serious about wanting more juice from the 600 will just source a 750 motor from a Katana or GSXR as that's usually cheaper than tearing your motor apart and putting bigger slugs in it.

There is also a kit from the UK which takes the 600 out to 884.

thanks mick for the link.  thats good and exactly what I was looking for.

Red: As far as buying a 750 what would you prefer it from a gsx or ar gsxr?

I tried looking but I could find much so what would be a good price on either engines...
obviously the best place to look is salvage, right?

besides the carbs would there be anything else I would need for that new engine (not instrument panels or the like but main engine things like the carbs or ecu).

I know I can get the info from the FAQ's probably but at this moment I dont have time...making dinner :bandit: ... but I will look later tonight just want your input.

No problem bloke,
GSXR 750 motors are a good upgrade to the trusty b6,
and to make for a very easy set up, use the gsxr carbs, but if ya prepared to stuff around the B6 carbs with a bit of work, would tame the perky 750 topend but at the same time increase the GSXR bottom end and midrange.
But in simple terms, bang for bucks, and next to no time in setup
go the Gsxr with carbs.
I do beleive there is a couple of extra HP to be found with the GSXR ignitor box, but I don't know that as fact.

The GSXR will have the most power on top, the GSX will be more oriented to the mid range, like the 600, just more of it everywhere.

For best results, the carbs and ignition box that goes with the motor you choose would be best.

IIRC, there was a 750 Kat conversion done by a member here several years back.  I'm thinking he didn't use the Kat ignition box, but I'm not certain.

Your best deals are going to be from private parties.  Salvage yards usually want quite a bit for one, especially a GSXR unit.  You may also be able to buy a complete bike in cosmetically challenged form and take everything you want off, and part out the rest to help recoup your investment - or if you're really lucky, turn a profit.  Assuming you have the space.

SO the GSXR it is.... Would it matter which year the engine came form...  Would I be fine putting an '05 oil,air in my 01 bandit frame?

Well, the ones that'll bolt right in without fuss would be the early GSXR's of the same archetecture as your B6.  The early GSXR750 basically comes in two flavors, the 88-89 short stroke motor and the '85-'87 & '90-'91 long stroke motor.  Additionally, the limited edition '89 GSXR750R is a long stroke motor - if you are fortunate enough to find one of these - but with only 500 bikes being built worldwide, good luck with that!  The '90 or '91 GSXR750 would be the next best choice, but any of them will be a big change over the B6 mill.

FWIW, the long stroke 750's (the GSX750F Katana is also a long stroke) have the same stroke as the B6, so if you found just a long stroke 750 top end, it will bolt up to the B6 bottom end.  The only caveat doing this is you must retain the B6 cam sprockets because the B6 uses a different set of cam chain & sprockets than the GSX/GSXR.

ok thats good to know.. Now is there any advantage of long stroke over short stroke or vice versa?

and second, you said eastiest would be to find a 91-ish year engine... are there anyproblems with a 01 engine from a gszr mating with the bandit frame?
