D'oh! A lucky day for a broken stud...
« on: March 03, 2014, 01:36:07 AM »
I was replacing my oil filter today on my B4 when...   :banghead: I snapped off one of three studs that hold the filter cover in place. You know that sinking feeling when you're sure the torque wrench should have clicked by now, but... it's still turning easy, so I guess it's okay and snap. Oh man.

As you can see, I was able to get it out... in fact it was super easy, despite having been in there for over twenty years!

And here's the kicker. I didn't want to put a pair of pliers on the bit of stud left poking out of the crankcase. I knew that was a recipe for disaster. I had to get a pair of nuts on their, jam them together and then turn it out with that. So, off to the hardware store to find some 6mm nuts. Easy peasy, but even better, right next to the nuts are two boxes of ... automotive grade studs including on that's just a couple of mm shorter than the broken one! Amazing!

Victory snatched from the jaws of certain doom!

Back on the road :)
