front fairing / turn signals
« on: April 04, 2007, 04:59:26 PM »
The PO of this bike installed some of the little (and cheap) plastic turn signals. The bulbs are not standard but are dual filament bulbs. The bulb holders in the turn signals have two hot contacts. There are no running lights, just turn signals per a normal single filament bulb. Does a stock Bandit 1200S have front running lights?

OK... one of the wiring jobs on these turn signals had a wire fall off. I can stick my hand down there and feel it. What are the turn signal wiring colors for turn signal, ground and running light on a Suzuki (if they have running lights). I don't have a wiring diagram yet... the manual I bought two weeks ago hasn't shown up yet.

Also, I have access to some shop manual PDF files... there is no section in this download for bodywork. How do you get the side fairing off that has the front turn signal attached? I took off the 3 or 4 socket head bolts and the phillips screw at the top but it still seems like there is a fastener towards the front holding things.... can anyone help with removal details? I only had a minute or two to look at removing this panel this morning...

Thanks!

The OEM signals are 1156/2156 single filament bulbs (single center contact) and there's no running lights in either end.

If your aftermarket lights are dual filament and everthing's wired up, someone has (tried to) put running lights on it.

Real good chance the aftermarket signals are either Lockhart-Phillips, or use the same bulbs LP's do. At least around here, most m/c shops carry the bulbs, but they are not a standard auto bulb, so you usually can't find them at the local auto parts store like you can with the stockers.

It's actually easy to do the fronts on some of the early 2G bikes as the main harness to the signals has a running light wire already there, it just doesn't have the extra wire on the signal's pigtail. Later bikes don't have the wire in the harness either though, but on US "S" models, there's still a keyed 12v unused wire behind the fairing. (It's there for a running headlamp bulb that mounts dead center in some other markets.)

I guess I can figure out how to get the running lights to work. I would tap the switched VDC hotwire that feeds the hi/lo beam in the left switchgear.  Just wondered if the stocker had running lights which would already place the hot wire at hand.

How do the side panels of the fairing where the turn signal is mounted come off? I think there were three socket head bolts and a phillips head at the top. There was one other fastener at the bottom that might have been press fit as it wasn't a screw in type fastener... any tips for removing the side panel would be appreciated. Thanks

Removing the fairing side panels is a bit of a PIA. In addition to the fasteners you've mentioned, there's also a screw underneath the "V" piece that surrounds the windscreen, so that piece has to come off, too... and it's a pain all by itself. To get to that hidden screw, you can follow Bill "Blade" Johnson's illustrated windscreen R&R instructions here:

http://www.billsbikesnservice.com/ws.htm

If you're going to take it apart to fix the blinkers, this would be a good time to do the headlight mod, too - since you're in there anyway.

To remove the side panels that the turn sigs mount to you'll need to remove the front vee (2 phillips on the dash, 2 allen heads on the vee), remove the windshield (2 rubber cush grommets), remove the centerpiece below the head light (2 allen heads and 4 snap in pop rivets) then the side panels can be removed (4 allen heads and one rubber-snubber per side)

That will all make more sense once you start looking at it.  Tips....  the vee piece needs to slide down and forward to remove - watch the plastic tabs on each side.  The snap in pop rivets are easily removed by pressing on the center with a small drift punch or screwdriver... listen for the "pop" and they'll pull right out.

I don't think it's possible to just remove the side panels on your 2001 model.

Don't forget, you have to pop the "V" off the mirror brackets before trying to slide it down & forward.

Not without the disassembly mentioned by Tex & myself.

Well, if the nose needs to come off, it will have to wait till the weekend as I don't have the bulbs on hand to swap. I also have a new windshield coming... so I guess these things should all be done at the same time. Thanks!
