Gas comes out of the tank vent when the tank is filled

On my 2000 Bandit 1200 the  tank doesn't have a hose attached to the vent. When I fill up the tank gas pours out the vent  on the bottom right of the tank.
Is there suppose to be a vent hose attached to this?
What could be causing this to happen other than tank overfilling?
Shouldn' t there be a check valve in this tank to stop this from happening?
I would appreciate any ideas.

Yes. It should route between back of the engine and the swingarm along with the battery vent (if you have a vented battery) and the airbox drain (which should have a plug on the end).

The only other thing would be expansion - not usually much (if any) expansion happens in cool/cold weather though.

Can't really do that since it has to be able to let excess fuel out as well as air in.

anyone else experienced this? Seems odd. I just filled ut the tank and gas was every where.

I seem to recall we had a member here once that had a similar problem. The internal tank vent line is metal, and his had cracked or corroded so that it leaked fuel whenever the fuel was at or above the defective part of the line. IIRC, the fix was to go into the tank from the bottom thru the fuel sender access panel and fix the line.

Good advice. I pulled the sending unit and discovered  a rust spot on a curve at about th 1/2 level of the tank. It looks like it will have to be a professional job to remove the tubing, replace the tubing and rebraze it.
I capped off the vent tube and drilled a 3/8 hole underneath the tank cap assembly. I plan on tapping it and using a 3/8 Al 90 degree fitting to keep out water.
I guess I will be looking for another silver tank.
By chance will any year 1200 Bandit  tank fit my bike. I know they change somewhat in 2001 one.

You will need a 1g tank.  I don't know how much of a difference there is, but I know that the 2g tanks hold a little bit more.  The only time I ever had my tank have venting problems was when my vent line from the tank got pinched.  I had fuel leaking out like crazy and the bike didn't run too well either.

The 2G bikes' tanks will not interchange with a 1G, the shapes are different. The bottom of the 2G tank is flatter.

You may be able to fix the vent line with a fuel safe epoxy.

All folks in the area's where freezing temps occur! Make sure the drain hose isn't kinked!! A drain under your fill lid runs thru the tank and out the bottom (rear right side) If hose won't let water out and it freezes vent tube will crack and fuel will leak when it thaws! Most wash the bike before storage so make sure its open!!
