Help: 650 leaking oil after start
« on: October 02, 2011, 04:46:29 PM »
Hi Everybody,
I just bought Bandit 650 -06 with 10k miles, i'm very happy with my Bandit but after i got it home i noticed that on every cold start the engine bursts oil on the left side near the oil filter.
I cleaned the oil filter and tried to tighten it with my hand but didnt get any oil from it and it didnt move with hand power. With a quick glance there was no oil to be found on any engine surfaces.
The oil apperars in 30 seconds after starting on a almost perfect circle, diameter about 2 inches.
When the engine is hot after driving, no oil leaks anywhere.

Could you please tell me what seem to be the problem? Any other Bandits with same kind of oil leak?

I'm not sure I quite understand...where does the oil appear? Are you talking about it dripping on the ground?

If it's not the oil filter, then the next thing to check would be the fittings and hoses to the oil cooler, or maybe a leak on the oil cooler itself?

Or possibly dripping from the oil drain plug?

Maybe the oil filter is a little loose or it's an aftermarket that doesn't fit too well or someone forgot to put a new rubber O-Ring with the filter. The reason it probably stops as the bike warms up is from expansion. If you can go grab an oil filter wrench adapter or just go to a bike shop and give them 10 bucks to tighten it up at least you could eliminate it as a source of the problem. To be honest 10K miles is way too low for an oil line to go. If you really wanted to eliminate the problem buy a new filter and do an oil change. Get an "official" suzuki filter so you know for sure that it will fit. It should come with a new O-ring on the filter.

Update:
ty for both answers, pmackie could be on the source of the problem.
The engine doesnt leak any oil when its hot. I started it today on a dark garage with paper under the engine and the same after start leak came as always and after warming up no more oil to the ground. I also started it a couple of times again and no more leaks.

I made a reservation for a local mechanic to check the bad boy and adjust the valve clearances at the same time plus oil change. Hopefully its only a matter of one leaking gasket.
