Air Induction System
« on: January 25, 2007, 09:48:33 AM »
Got my Ivan's Stage 1. Followed all the install instructions to the T but final inst is to disable air induction sys by pulling hoses and plugging box nipples. Is this necessary? Will it effect the setup? What if I leave it?

I wouldn't think it would matter one way or the other. I know it doesn't matter with Holeshot's kits. The PAIR system you're talking about only puts fresh air into the exhaust, so should have no effect on jetting. According to Dale, the only performance gained my removing the PAIR system is the weight loss of a couple of pounds. If all you do is cap it off, you won't even get that.

Ivan really got the amount, size and location of holes in the air box down to a science against dyno test results and why he emphasizes that the air box instructions be followed to the letter. Allowing the large air induction hole to remain unplugged changes the pressure in the air box and that tested formula. Apparently intake pressure relative to how your jetting is set up is very critical and why Ivan recommends that if you not going to do the air box modification and leave it stock, there is no need to install the 125 jets and plug the air induction system. I guess its like using orange soda as a substitute for orange juice in making a screwdriver and figuring no one will know the difference.
Which when you look at the dyno run results of Ivan's kit compared to other kits, you begin to understand why. In all fairness however I would recommend that you follow the instructions to the letter first, complete install and tuning, then get some Dyno tests done with and without the air induction blocked.

Actually I have been wanting to remove the whole induction system but I am too lazy to cut out the individual port plates and I think they want $100 for set which are chrome color not engine black. I would like to drop the wight about 8 pounds and have the room to install a low profile radiator fan and heat sensor behind the oil cooler for the summers here. Its not an issue mind you but I like my oil like I like my women, cool. And don't you dare add anything to that joke!

I would probably cut the plates out of mild steel after cutting a pattern the other problem is having a gasket that will hold up seal the hot exhaust gases. I have asbestos gasket I got from a Coast Guard engineer because it is impossible to find but holds up to almost any heat. Another way would be to sacrifice the air induction plates themselves, cut the tubes off the ends and braze up the holes, grind and paint.
The fan isn't for riding but for sitting in LA traffic or just sycroniseing the carburetors. I wouldn't of believe that the B12 gets hold if sitting still, but without a fan the readings on the manometer get erratic and you cant synchronize, and yes I do use a house fan for now when I sync. But that's it, stationary cooling, and sounding cool when thermo probe turns it all on. One from a small car radiator at a junk yard, repainted engine black or international orange (jest).

I have capped it off. Am concidering removing the whole system. Looks like I could do it without disturbing the header. As for gaskets, in my case the bike is brand new and I could use the gaskets from the existing setup. I gusee the only thing that bothers me about it is...what a waist of materials and technology. Anybody want to buy a brand new PAIRS system? Ya, right!

NO! Do your self a favor by placing it all in a plastic bag taped up and labeled for future annual emission test requirements. Like here if they don't require them now, they are coming and the induction system would be required. Why I will probably buy the kit or cut my own plates leaving the induction system intact and shoved away.

On the flip side of the issue, if you feel a little guilty with all the globble warming drama, you can always leave it on, taking the plug on and off as you conscious alternate between political ideologies.

Off topic, On the news two weeks ago showed a big chunk of Canada ice shelf broke off and drifted away into the ocean which sent Al Gore into a irate "told you so" so media commentary. Personally I wont believe it until it hits Arizona.
