I can not figure this one out. Help???
« on: October 24, 2005, 01:41:28 AM »
I have a 92 b4 and am having some issues with the damn thing. so what happened is that the biek was running and my friend drained the battery. He charged the battery with a 1 amp charger and when he went to take the c harger off he either arched or touch the frame.. to make a long story short the battery blew. It made a loud bang and then I found that the whole side had spit open. after this the bike started once I ran it for a second and then decided that all was well and went inside. Well the biek will not start now and I have no idea what the hell is going on. I have replaced the battery, replaced the coils checked the plugs and made sure that I am getting fuel. I think that it is either a short from a bit of the acid getting on the wiring harness or that I blew the CDI. I am tempted to say it is the CDi and get a new one but they are damn expensive and I don't  want to waste the dosh. I am sure that it is an electircal issue as I am spraying starter fluid to try and get her to just start up and nothing.

When cranking, is the bike getting spark.  The electrical system is well fused so you shouldn't have burned anything up.  Start with the basics and check all connections, some acid may have worked its way in somewhere and corroded something.

I agree with Tacoman, check all the fuses you can find, and check 'em again.  If the battery blew you can bet a few fuses were taken out in the process.

Then let your friend know he's not allowed to touch the Bandit again... :duh:

Also slap a multimeter's amp tester in serial with the postive battery terminal.    Then with the bike ignition off you can see if you are drawing current from your battery, which might mean you have a short somewhere.

Two more questions.
« Reply #5 on: October 24, 2005, 07:32:43 PM »
So let me ask two more questions. If I have a sort will the bike not start at all. I do have good spark so I don't see why it is not starting. Second if the CDI is broken will I get any spark at all or does it depend. I also have foudn a UK company that sells the things if anyone is intrested. Although It seems like I might just try and fix mine first.
Thanks

Sorry a bit unclear, does your starter motor turn over, it's just not firing or is your starter not engauging?

If you have spark on all four cylinders and the engine is turning over nicely, then it's time to look elsehwere for your problem.

Is the bike firing at all? Does it sound like it's even trying to start? Is gas getting into the cylinders? Thats easy enough to check, the plugs will be damp after a bit of cranking.

Spark on the plugs should come in a nice rythm, there should be no 'missed beats', and all four plugs should be sparking (not at the same time). What is the condition of the spark? Is it a narrow rather sickly looking spark, or is it a nice fat blue spark? If it's not a nice fat blue one, go get yourself some new plugs.

From my understanding, most dead Igniters will result in a no-spark condition. Some, though, will still spark. However, the ones that do still spark do not spark in a nice rythm and do not produce spark on all four cylinders, more than likely just on two (there are two 'signal' lines from the Igniter, one to each coil).

Yeah like Maniac said, I've heard of black boxes going bad by not firing the cylinders at the right time but still showing spark.  That might just be mythology, though.

I'm interested to know if you'er getting cranking at all.

will the bike start if there is a short?
« Reply #9 on: October 25, 2005, 12:41:24 AM »
ok so here is the deal. I do have spark and it seems to be good but I am not sure how fat it should be? it is about as thick as a medium sized sowing needle. I am having trouble getting the inner two plugs out as they seemd to be in there pretty good. I am not sure if they are seized that bad or what. I have taken the plugs and shown them to some of my friends. besides from being dirty they say they look pretty good. I am getting fuel and have also been spraying starter fluid into the cylinders so it seems that there is just not enough spart to get ingnition.
Again if there is a short will the biek not start or will it just drain the battery. At this point I think it is the CDI but I am getting spark. (but I amnot sure if it is enough or fat enough at you put it.) I am really gettin tired of going out every day and playing with the damn thing. I re bulit the cars and she ran. then my damn friend well you get the idea.  :?:

Depending on what's shorted and where, the bike won't start AND will drain the battery if it's on a circuit that's not protected by a fuse, or if the short is before the fuse.

There is a very large fuse right near the battery. I think it protects the starter circuit if I remember correctly. I blew mine in a similar fashion. Inspect that first. I will have to pull out a manual if you need further info.

If the plugs are dirty, replace them. It doesn't really matter if they 'look' ok, I've seen plenty of my plugs that 'looked' OK but yet refused to run correctly when placed within the engine. Dunno why but these little plugs are more finicky than the big ones you see in a car. They are pretty cheap, so let's start there. First things first, though, get some penetrating oil and spray it down in around the two plugs that won't come out and then let it sit for a bit. Be careful getting them out, these are -aluminum- head bikes!
