Author Topic: Idle fluctiates / Dead spot at 4500-5500 RPM (Read 4451 times)

I have a 2000 Bandit 1200S. It has a Stage 2 jet with PODS and yoshi exhaust.

Over the last 6000 miles I have put on this bike since I bought it, the power is screwing up. Its annoying, and Im getting pretty bad gas mileage. at 95-102 miles from full tank I have to swap to reserve.
My Idle RPM never sticks where it should, I set it at 1500 and a week later its back at 1000, I set it at 1300 and its back to 1000 a week later. I have done this a good 6 times.

I got a Valve adjustment, and a Carb sync, and I cleaned the K&N PODS. I am wondering if the air mixture /fuel pilot adjustment will help fix this. The reason I haven't done this yet, is Im not sure what kind of tool I need to reach these screws near a hot engine(any tool suggestion).
I'm thinking of doing this, changing the oil, and if nothing works, get a dyno/jet adjustment.

Is it possible your idle set screw is vibrating loose causing the idle to drop over time?

I have been thinking of that myself, Im wondering how I can fix this???? would replacing the screw fix that? its not like I can tighten it up.

regardless this is the least of my problems, Im sick of shifting from 1st to second all the time since I have such a terrible dead spot. Had a few risky downshifting to 1st and lazy toed into neutral going into a turn. Its because of this large dead spot.

Replacing the screw might do it, but I'd probably just paint it with some nail polish or use a dab of LocTite to keep it from moving.

For your mid-range ills, your needles are the most likely cause, but mains would have some influence, too. Pilot jets, and air screws are mostly effective at low throttle settings like 0-1/4 throttle.

So how much of a pain is the needle adjustment going to be?? Is this just one of the things I will have to deal with for using a jet 2?

I was gona add mid range miss is usually (most of the time) needle adjustment. Once the mid range smooths out some then play with the air/fuel screws.

Like paul said, a dab of loctite will do the trick if vibrating loose is your only prob.

Call Dale at Holeshot and ask him about your issue and baseline settings, then work from there.

SHEESH thanks for that Holeshot suggestion Mike. from now on I will be wasting money non stop on bandit Mods. Unbelievable the ammount of junk I want from there.

As for this huge issue, its been somewhat resolved. today I drained the small ammount of water from the carbs, I also adjusted the idle, and turned the air/mix screw out 3/4 a turn more. The deadzone is almost completely gone. If I hadn't dealt with it for so long I probably wouldn't have realized its there.
I'll be getting a timing advancer from holeshot ASAP that might help some, and I will reclean/reoil the pods again. Anyone else feel that they have to clean there pods every 2 weeks? I do ride ALOT, but sheesh...

You mush have dirty air down there. I clean mine about once a year, whether they need it or not.

I ride all the time and hard too, I believe the real problem is that it isn't kept in a garage or anything. Its underneath a roof , but I get lazy and forget to cover them up. I cover them whenever its going to rain or something. but yea the air is rough in the summer, I think its mostly pollen.
