Gas Tank Removal

How do you take the gas tank off without spilling a bunch of gas all over the place? There doesn’t seem to be an “off” setting to the petcock.

Please advise.

I just did this for the first time last week and was wondering the same thing. IT turns out you leave the petcock in the on position.

As I understand it the fuel only get pulled when there is a vacuum applied in the on and reserve positions. If you put it in the prime position there will be gas all over the place.

yep, leave it in the ON, providing your petcock isn't broken (which they sometimes are) you should not get fuel spilling. However even with it in the correct position there is some fuel in the line as well as the petcock that WILL drip out.

I knew (from the manual) that you leave it in the ON position, but didn't know why.  Seems like there should be an OFF if there's and ON!

"ON" & "RES" are automatically "off" whenever there's no vacuum applied to the petcock. (Assumes an operational petcock, of course.)
"PRI" will flow fuel at all times.

If you have a defective petcock, you'd need to pinch the fuel line closed and disconnect at the carb to remove the tank without making a mess.
