Nervous experience with Electricals
« on: April 28, 2009, 01:18:17 AM »
So my streetfighter (pictures in an upcoming post) conversion went waaaay better than I expected. :duh: Never thought suzuki dumped longer cabling for the B12s. Now with my sweet shiny replacement lamp, little do I know the harness has been rubbing against the steering head while steering. So I stop by a pizza place and get some grub, get back on the bike and oops no lights no crank, nothing.

Luckily Im 2 blocks from home, so I end up pushing the bike home. How come women never give you a second look when that happens huh? Anyways... get the multimeter and check out the fuses. Turns out I fried the main fuse (30A). So I peruse around the bike to find the aforementioned harness exposed with two wires split and caressing each other intimately. The root cause of all evil. Electricals! Lucky for me, I was close to home. I guess it shorted coz of rain from a strong shower a couple of hours prior. Glad the bike didnt stall on the 20 mile trip home.

Anyways for my bandit brothers out there, always remain wary of electricals. Always carry spare fuses, a foot or 2 of wire, some tape. Which brings me to the question. The ideal minimal motorcycle survival kit?

Leatherman
1 ft wire
Fuses
2-3 zip ties
All in one Allen wrench w/OE toolkit
Tire patches
Chain lube
1 lighter/Flashlight
Clear plastic tube
Safety wire
2-3 Bandages, neosporin
1 bulb to build a quick continuity tester

I've had most of this stuff velcroed under the seat for the past few years and its worked well for me  :thumb:.

I had a fuse popping problem for a while some years ago.  It  really sucked and I was continously losing my speedo and lights.  The bike would run, but not the accessories.
03 Naked Bandit 1200 <br />Vitamin B12, its great for the soul!
