Oil change during engine break-in
« on: May 30, 2008, 03:17:26 AM »
Hi Guys,

I have a brand new GSX650F, same engine as the liquided cooled 650 bandits, and I am currently running in the engine.  I have done 500kms with another 500kms to go before the first service.  What I want to know is:
Is it worthwhile for me to change the oil now, or should I just leave it for the 1000km service?
I dont want to replace the oil filter coz they cost so much but I figure changing the oil will go a long way towards removing any particles of metal that have gotten into the oil.  Or am I deluding myself and a filter change would also be needed?  If that was the case I think I would just wait for the 1000km service.

Make your own decision, I would be doing my second oil * filter chang at 500kms.

The manual recommends an oil and filter change at 1000 km, and I don't really see any reason to do otherwise.

How expensive is an oil filter in Oz?  Here in the States, you can easily get one for under $10.
Personally, I never change oil without changing a filter, I just don't want to leave that dirty oil in there and figure if it's worth the time to change the oil, the filter should go, too... even if the factory says change the filter every other oil change (after break-in).

The filter is taking out any larger metal particles. The oil condition will be fine (viscosity, TAN, TBN etc) at 500 kms (300 miles).

If you're planning to keep the bike forever, then by all means, change the oil early, but I would advise you change the filter as well.
