Author Topic: Windshield mounting question (Read 4432 times)

So I'm mounting my new Suzuki aftermarket windscreen, and following the directions. When I get to the part about removing the screws at the bottom of the windscreen, after the upper fairing is off, I discover there are no screws there:

The instructions in the Clymer manual and the Suzuki instruction sheet seem to indicate there should be some sort of fastener and rubber damper there, but I can't find a decent picture. Anybody got any photos or able to describe what's missing so I know how to replace it?

You mean these two?

There should be two rubber grommets with threaded inserts that go there. The grommets go thru both the fairing and windscreen and when tightened with their screws, swell the grommet to hold it in place.

Yeah, that's it. I don't have the screws or the grommets. The windshield looks very clean at that point and has no marks at all, so I think they were never installed.

After looking at your photos, I'm guessing it's part #13 in this diagram, and I actually found a part number BikeBandit.com, so I'll be visiting my dealer tomrrow. Thanks for the help Red01-- I was having trouble picturing what was supposed to be there from the small pics in the Clymer manual but your post really cleared that up.

Yes, #13 is the grommet (& #12 is the screw), but if you take the numbers you got off BikeBandit to the dealer, it'll probably do you no good - or worse yet, get you the wrong part. Bike Bandit started using their own part numbering system to keep people from using them as a part number source to find a part somewhere else cheaper. Ron Ayers Suzuki Parts Fiche

On the Ron Ayers Suzuki microfiche, they show #13 as the grommet p/n 09159-05019 ($3.47) and the screw is #12, p/n 02142-15163 ($0.84). Compare these numbers to what you got off BB and see if they're the same.

Once again I am indebted to you! That's a much better schematic, and I can see its two separate part numbers.... you would think I would have checked RonAyers first, since that's where I got the windshield

Bastards at BikeBandit want an extra $0.05 for the screw and $0.38 for the nut!!!

Sorry, yeah they have totally different part numbers.

UPDATE: I was at my dealer today, and confirmed that the numbers I got from RonAyers.com are Suzuki part numbers, so Red01 is correct that BikeBandit.com has created their own numbers.

I'd be interested to hear if your fairing/windshield displayed vibration noise at 4000 rpm like some of our bikes seem to do and if installing the correct screws (for your aftermarket screen) helped.

Yes, it did. It started just under 4000rpm. It had gotten a little worse of late, so when I found the screws missing, I wondered if they had come out and caused that. I looked at the windshield pretty closely though, and there's no scratches or marks where they would have made contact, so my best guess is they were never there.

I'll have to let you know if the right screws fix the problem... I'm still waiting for the order to come in!

I found your screen article informative having bought an after market screen, because i did'nt have a manual.i found the plastic tabs a bit of a nightmare to release (happen to snap the lower 2 on the cowling) apart from this no problems, thanks

I broke one too-- seems to be a common error, but from what I read on here it doesn't cause any problems (http://forums.banditalley.net/viewtopic.php?t=3881.) The problem is you can't see how the lower tabs fit until you get one out (or break one off!!)

Anyway, I finally got the correct hardware and installed the new screen. Went on a short test ride and I'm happy to say the new screen does not have the 4000rpm buzz. I can still feel it in the handlebars and pegs as the revs pass through 4000, but the screen doesn't have that horrible loud rattle like it did before. The wind protection is also much better. Most of the windblast seems to be directed over my head now (I'm 6/2 with a long torso.)
