Chain help, i jsut need a new one. and master link Q.
« on: August 10, 2011, 01:28:08 PM »
first time ive ever done anything with a chain on a bike.....

ive searched............ no where can i find what chain a 2001 b12 has. i dont know why.

KITS dont tell you what they are.
chain is not even listed when i try to get oem parts from bike bandit.
forum search is usless.
internet is useless, all i get is //give me money and i give you mystery "high quality" chain// links.

is it 530???  but when i look at 530's they all say not for an engine that big.

and
is a master link safe to use or do you have to rivet?

When I do an ebay search for GSF1200 chains they all come up as 530 pitch with 110 links.  But don't use cheap chains, they die too soon.  Rivets are supposedly safer than clip links.

It's a 530.  I have nothing but good things to say about the DID VM and ZVM series of chains.  According to the DID site the ZVM-X 530 is rated for bikes up to 1400cc and the VM is good up to 1000cc.  Consider this covers the most powerful of each of these two categories and the Bandit 1200/1250's horsepower & torque levels are well below that of the top liter bikes.  I have run the VM on my B12 and got over 25,000 miles of service out of it - about double what the OE chain lasted.  When the VM finally wore out, I did replace it with a ZVM and it has ~14,000 miles on it and is still looking fine.

You will probably have to get a 530 that is longer than 110 and cut some links off.  When I got a 525/114 for my B400 I had to cut off 6 links as it was only available as 525/120.  I used a Dremel tool with the little cutting wheel.

I have a buddy that owns a bike shop, old school shop, he doesn't have an on-line connection. He still uses catalogs,I just look up what I want. They all give the tensile ? strength and I pick one at the top. The last one(RK racing chain) came in 110 links for my stock 45/15 witch I replaced at the same time. But I have purchased chains at 120 links with different gearing and just cut them to size.
