I had mentioned on the board before the crash that I needed to replace one of the case covers on my B12, and waas looking for an equivalent to the suzuki recommended "Suzuki Bond". Anyway I decided just to get the recomended Suzuki stuff, but my Honda/Suzuki/Yamaha dealer didn't have it and recommended some Honda bond HT. When I got it home and opened it up it specifically said it was for use when there was not a gasket.

So I'm looking for an opinion, do I proceed with or without the gasket, or go back to the dealer and ask them to try again? I'm fairly new to wrenching, but this shoud be an easy one.

It's up to you. Whatever makes you feel good. Really. The factory used paper gaskets - and at least near as I can tell from when I pulled my covers to replace them with NRC's, they didn't use any "Suzuki Bond" on 'em. I'm sure "Suzuki Bond" is not a proprietary RTV, but is made by some big chemical company that makes various kinds of RTV sealants and packages it for The Big S. These types of RTV's can be used in place of paper gaskets, or in addition to them.

Today's NASCAR trivia... several years back, Permatex sponsered a NASCAR that didn't have any gaskets in it. Everything was sealed up with various Permatex products. (At least according to their claims... I suspect it still had a couple of head gaskets.) Yes, the car was competitive.

Follow up

I swapped out the case cover today. the RTV sealant only goes in two places, not along the entire mating surface. Looks like it goes at the seam where the two halves of the case meet, to take care of any irregularity. So all is well.

Since I was working on the bike anyway, and it was in the low 40's today. I took her out for the first time this year

Spring better hurry up I'm gettin that itch!!

I have used Honda Bond both with and w/o a gasket. It works great so long as you let it cure before you start the bike and make sure the surface is free of oil.

The only down side to NOT using a gasket is that it's a big bitch to get the cover off again.

When it comes to sealing stuff, I use the paper gaskets WITH a light layer of permatex. The temperature rating of course, determnes the grade of what permatex type you would use.
