Post subject: handlebar vibrations

I just changed handlebars on my b6. The handlebars I had on had a bar snake in them. Before trying to remove the bar snake and put in the new, lower handlebars, I decided to try a trick I saw mentioned in one of the bike mags. I removed one of the bar ends, leaned the bike over on it's side and filled up the handlebar with #8 lead shot. I got less buzz in the grips with the lead shot than i did with the bar snake. In fairness to the bar snake, the new handlebars are a little lower than the old ones, so in theory, the new ones shouldn't vibrate as badly. the vibrations that do come through seem to be at a lower frequency than before. I spilled some shot while pouring it so I'm not sure exactly how much I used but it was less than 5lbs., probably a little under 4. Lead shot generally comes in 25lb. bags and it cost me less than $20. For that, you can do several handlebars. If you don't like the results, take a bar end off and lean the bike over. Gravity will take care of the rest. I didn't notice any change in handling from the extra weight but I don't really ride it that hard.

Hi Flip,

I filled my B12 bars with regular copper BBs - same effect. The bars are much more comfortable. I can't compare them to a bar snake but am glad that you could. Thanks!

Thanks for sharing yourt comparison!

I'll move this into the General FAQ since it should apply to any bike with tubular bars.
