License Plate Holder
« on: June 18, 2007, 02:05:57 PM »
I've heard that there's a license plate holder you can get that will allow you to slide your plate out from the side. This of course is a handy resource when you park in places like ticket-happy New York City. I asked at my local shop and they were not familiar with this product. Does anyone here know where I may find such a plate holder? Thanks.

I would think if you took your plate with you when you parked, you'd be asking for the police to impound your bike instead of getting a parking ticket... but I don't know the particulars of NY law.

No it's commonly done in the City, particularly by messengers.  As a matter of fact, it was a messenger who told me about this plate holder in the first place, but I thought it was far more readily accessible and didn't ask where I could get one.

When I was living in Manhattan (not too long ago), a lot of my friends had their plates held on with a couple strips of velcro tape for just the situation you describe.

I have reservations about Velcro. It may be fine for a bike that runs around the town, but it you venture for any distance as I occasionally do, I would be worried about losing the plate. As debris builds up on Velcro surfaces, their ability to grip diminishes. They eventually wear also.

What was great about that plate frame was the it was spring loaded and pushed the plate up against the inside of the frame. I've been thinking of ways to modify a standard frame to do the same, or similar. One thing I was thinking a about was a hinged frame, either from the top/bottom or side, with either a detented cam lock or, simpler yet, nylon butterfly bolts.
