Motorcyclist hurt in chase on I-64
Richmond Times-Dispatch Jul 22, 2005
A 24-year-old man was in critical condition last night after running from state police and crashing his motorcycle into a trooper's car on Interstate 64 in eastern Henrico County.
Daniel Brian Sturdivant of Williamsburg was critically injured after being thrown from a 2003 Honda motorcycle. He was taken to VCU Medical Center, said Sgt. Kevin Barrick, a police spokesman.
Trooper R.J. Brown III, who was in the cruiser that was struck, was treated for minor injuries and released from the hospital before noon yesterday, Barrick said.
Traffic was snarled for several hours on eastbound I-64 as a result of the crash.
The incident began at 6:53 a.m. after several motorists called police about a motorcyclist traveling in excess of 100 mph on I-64 in New Kent County, weaving in and out of traffic, changing lanes without signaling and cutting vehicles off, according to information from the state police.
Four minutes later, a trooper clocked the motorcycle by radar traveling 93 miles per hour near exit 214, Barrick said, "and a pursuit ensued."
The state trooper lost sight of the motorcycle, but another trooper spotted it seven minutes later at mile marker 197 and also pursued it, Barrick said.
As Brown was getting into position to join the pursuit at mile marker 195, near the Laburnum Avenue exit, the motorcycle crashed into the rear of his cruiser, Barrick said.
The accident is still under investigation, Barrick said.
