Black or chrome engine guards...what looks best?
« on: May 30, 2006, 11:14:35 AM »
I'm gonna pull the sliders off my bike and go with engine guards instead this summer.  I believe they're gonna give me much better protection.  I'm just hung up on whether to go chrome or black.

Here's the black one...

I have the black Suzuki and I like how it wraps the engine.  Regardless, I would go with the black.  I've had people look at my bike for five minutes before they even notice the case guards.

Black!  I have a blue '97 -- you hardly even notice the black guards against the black engine.  Oh, yeah they work.  Last summer I went down in a campground on wet grass in Ohio - did a three point on the exhaust can, engine guard and handlebar end ---- and zero damage to the bike, not even a scuff (Mud & wet grass).  I however did a one point landing on my shoulder and ended up with a grade 3 AC separation.  The Bandit is fine, and I healed quickly, deformed, but quickly.

Why would you NOT want them to be the same color as the engine?  (And unobtrusive)

Herb, I can't tell if those guards are attached to the engine mounts or not. If they are,.. steer clear.  I have read reports ( of course you think I can find them now that I'm looking?) of people going down, and the crash bars rip a hole in the engine!  Ouch!  sort of defeats the purpose.

A LOT of these engine guards and frame sliders are more for looks than for functionality.  Be careful of what you get.

One of the old motorush forums mentions that one guy had trouble with stress fractures.  -3- engine guards and counting. Click here for the link

I'm up for that, but all I ever see are bright chrome or black.  Looks like the consensus is black.  I guess black would be visually repairable, as opposed to chrome, eh?  But no bling?!

Stormi, it looks to me like all three of my options (Suzuki, Givi, Renntec) attach to at least one of the motor mounts on each side.  Probably two on each side, now that I study the pictures.  Hmmmm...

My vote is for black, too.
The Givi & Renntec ones are better built than the Suzuki ones.
Besides, you can't buy new Suzuki guards anymore anyway. (At least thru US Suzuki.)
