Busa vs K1200S
« on: May 08, 2005, 03:52:14 AM »
I was in one of my local dealerships today and had a look at the new BMW K1200S. Looks like a very nice bike, and then I asked how much?

23,000 CAD vs 13,900 for a new Busa.

I can certainly say the beemer lost all it's attraction.

The extra 9 and a bit gorilla's is for the frontal labotomy, so you can actually ride around thinking you are a cut above everybody else.
Bloody shaft driven tractors.
In my younger days when I rode a hardly dangerous, I had a smart ass BMW rider pull up beside me and say, "whats it like riding a tractor" the cheek of the bugger. My reply was " You should know, but you have me amused how you manage a pogo stick at the same time.
BTW I hate BMW"s :stickpoke: almost as much as Hon, Hoon, Hooon.
Foot loose and fancy free.
Looking for adventure and what ever comes our way.

Sorry to say, but  the new K1200s is a much more refined and capable of more riding styles than the Busa IMHO. The price is steep but you get shaft drive, ABS, heated grips and world class suspension and brake systems all in a bike that WILL run with a Busa and a ZX-12. I look at them and I just drool... I am not a big Beamer fan, but that bike would be mine if I was willing to pay the dough!! They did their homework when they designed and built that bike from the ground up.

Yes, but it is a close in the ugliest bike race.  I think the BWM just inches by the Busa.  IMO both are hideous in the looks department.

Recalls so far.....

1- Routine quality control tests conducted at the factory revealed that wear and tear was occurring at the camshafts. It had to be changed.

2- The circlip for the cam follower did not meet BMW Motorrad specifications. It had to be changed.

3- BMW made modifications in the combustion chamber, in the mapping of the ignition and injection levels and in the air box.

But this happens.

I spoke with a local fellow who lets just say has a very strong intrest in Bikes, and was at the unvailing of the 1200s and was able to do some track time. His comments were that its was a nice bike, but definetly NOT a Busa killer. He claims it may run with a Blackbird, but not a Busa.
I like the looks of the K1200S but would in no way pay the price for one. I work for a German Engineering company and my opinion is German Engineers are a bit overated.

I will be interested to see the write ups on this one.

It is hard to compare them by recalls.  BMW is very particular about how their bikes (and cars as well) run in the long term.  They also aren't ashamed or afraid to issue recalls to fix anything that is keeping their products from performing to the highest standard.

The K1200 is the first bike from them that I liked in the first place.

All that said, I think I would go with the Busa myself in that situation due to the price.

I think comparing busas to beemers is a bit like comparing gsxrs to ducatis.  If you the want the flat out quickest bike from point A to B at the best cost, go Japanese.  You won't beat the Japanese for performance per dollar which is their niche and they do it well.  As for the euro bikes and Harley for that matter, its the bling.  Name, visual appeal, and even cost (being exclusive) are their strong point.  I'll take the performance per $$ route.
