Changed grips; can't get bar end back on ('97 1200)
« on: March 25, 2006, 04:51:34 PM »
It appears inside the bar, there is a nut that has fallen over.
This has happened on both sides of the bars... i was able to fish the nut upright, but as soon as i put the allen into it, the nut just falls over.

Am I missing something?

:duh:

There was a rubber grommet inside the bar - i pulled that out, and out came the nut.

Apparently, these are aftermarket bar ends that use the "pinch" formula to achieve their insertion. (ok, that was a bit pornographic.)

Anyhow, they're in, but they really don't seem secure.

Do the stock bandit bar ends use this "pinch the grommet" method?

Yep the stock ones or all I know of use the same system! Some of the older bikes had a metal wedge that worked like the stuff on bicycle seats or handle bar attaching it inside a pipe! A bit of glue will hold the nut in place. They don't need to be super ridged. :beers:

The key to removing bar ends is to not remove the bolt, just loosen it and pul the ends out with their expanding retetaier apparatus still attached... then you won't have to go fishing in the handlebar.

It's a mistake most of us make once - and hopefully learn from it.

I can't seem to get the damned thing to stay in with authority.
Is it possible the rubber grommet thing has a certain lifespan?

Does it come with its own sys, or are you using the oem? Most have the new sys like this!

Clean the rubber and the inside of your bar tubes with rubbing alcohol (not to be consumed) let dry and it should grip ok, you may have it oily!

 He's got more than that on you... he's been around thru a board crash and a site move that both reset join dates and post counts.

He's still got some catching up to do to catch up to me though...

I just post a lot - I don't impart a great deal of wisdom (see cranberry juice comment above).  BTW - this iteration of the board started in March 05.
