Do they realy beleive I was born yesterday.
« on: February 22, 2008, 03:42:00 AM »
F*#* me standing, its bad enough when ya kids, try ya on for size.
But when a grown man tries ya on for size it really shytes me off.
I took my tech drawings down to the engineer to build my custom fork brace, come front guard mount for project REX. Looks the drawings over, asks a couple of questions, which I might add had the answers in the drawing notes, and then states hmmm thats gonna take me the best part of a day to knock up.
After picking myself and my dislodged jaw up from the floor, I squarely looked at the old bugger, fine forget it, heres the alloy blocks (it's a 5 piece unit) just cut the 63mm holes x 2 and I'll do the rest.
"What", he says "how ya gonna do that", "the cheap and old fashioned way, with a hacksaw some files and a dremel, and I'll do quicker than you".
Why oh why do people think we are all efen morons? :annoy:
I'm gonna start looking for a old fashioned mill, just a glorified drill press with a movable base. It will cost just a little bit more than an engineer wants to charge me for a simple 5 piece fork brace. Yeh I now the shed of creation will soon be not big enough.
Foot loose and fancy free.

Well, the guy wants to put his kids thru college and go on an out-of-country vacation.
... and he wants you to pay for it with your simple little project.

I tell ya, ya know where he can send his efen kids. I found several mills second hand f all run out, and cheaper, and I mean way cheaper than a days efen labour at engineers rates.
In fact I found a multi head unit in SA (Well worth the 8-9 hr drive to pick it up, one way) for a fraction more than an engineers days labour rate. Also remembering I have to make or get made 2 yokes to convert the B6 front end to the upside downies.

Why would you want to make a fork brace when they are readily for sale at multiple places?

For a very simple reason, Project rex does not and can not use a standard front guard, 1, I hate the look of the standard guard, 2, I have removed from the lower fork legs the butt ugly mounts for the standard front guard, 3, the guard I'm using a 88-89 GSXR slingshot bolts up to a fork brace. 4, fork braces commercially  available for the project Rex, yes do work as a fork brace but fail at holding a GSXR guard.

Hence the need for a custom made unit.

Cmon Mick
the poor old engineer is just trying to make an honest quid,(mostly yours)
May as well keep an eye out for a surface grinder too while you're looking for tools.

Before Mick says it I will - "honest" - it may be legal but honest and ethical, I don't think so Tim.

Sounds like one of my local bike shops, "The eldest" took his KLR there to get one of the screws on the brake reservoir replaced (the head was burred).  The pricks wanted to charge him an hours labour  :duh:.  I suggested that he takes it to our car mechanic and see what he could do.  Well, 5 minutes later, at no cost, not only did the mechanic remove and replace the burred screw, he topped up the brake fluid as well.

Yes he has, although he is 18, so he probably hasn't learnt anything :duh:
