Two hurt in weekend motorcycle wreck

Alcohol is reported to have played a part in a weekend accident that involved a handful of Garvin County residents and three motorcycles.



In all there were five individuals, none reportedly wearing helmets, riding the cycles involved in the collision that occurred at 7:28 p.m. Saturday about three miles west of Ada in Pontotoc County.



State troopers reported all three cycles were together in a group while traveling westbound on state Highway 19.



At one point a 2001 Azue motorcycle driven by Ronald Clifton of Stratford, 40, swerved and struck a 1997 Harley Davidson driven by Paoli resident Johnny Mantooth, 44.



Riding on the same cycle as Mantooth was Tammy Brownell, 36, Paoli.



When Mantooth lost control of the cycle, both he and Brownell were ejected 235 feet.



During this same time, Clifton's motorcycle was laid over in the roadway as he was ejected 280 feet.



A third motorcycle, a 2005 Harley Davidson operated by Gary Eastwood, 50, then drove into Clifton's cycle resulting in a passenger, Janie Eastwood, 46, being ejected 30 feet. Both are Paoli residents.



Clifton was initially transported by Valley View E.M.S. to Valley View Hospital in Ada. He was later airlifted to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City, where he was admitted in serious condition with trunk internal injuries.



Both Brownell and Janie Eastwood were also taken to the Ada hospital.



Eastwood was admitted in stable condition with head and arm injuries, while Brownell was treated and released.



Not injured in the accident were Mantooth or Gary Eastwood.



Leading the accident investigation was Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Robert Benedict of the Pontotoc County Detachment.



Assisting at the scene were Pontotoc County deputies and Ada and Pickett firefighters.
