Exhaust coating?
« on: February 16, 2007, 09:55:58 AM »
Does anyone know what kind of coating Dale uses on his powder satin black mufflers? I'd like to get my yoshi pipe coated. I get sick of polishing it when I wash my bike. I like the look of the satin black muffler better anyways.

I too would like to hear some replies to your question, Smokey.

I always liked satin black pipes, and if I can find a good, tuff coating that won't scrape off easily, I may do my whole system.

I know there's lots of types of high-temp paint out there, and I guess you can powder-coat high-temp like you said.

But I'd also be interested in some sort of black ceramic coating, anyone know of where to get that done?

Also there's black chrome, really durable but pricey, as long as you didn't mind the high-gloss...

Is there already a thread on this subject buried around here somewhere, perhaps?

I emailed Dale the other day to find out specifically what coating he uses and this was the reply I received;
Quote

Hi temp stain black powder coat

It will not dis color or peel off

So is it really a powder coating or is it a ceramic coating? I've never heard of a hi temp powder coating before. Any input?

The black on the can wouldn't have to withstand as high of a temperature as what the header has to. AFAIK, Dale's header & mid-pipe are still ceramic coated, only the black cans have the powder coat.

Thanks for the insight. I guess I will try a black powder coating on my yoshi pipe and see how it withstands. First I need to drill out the rivets for the tag on the muffler so it can be properly coated. I will post some pictures of my results.

I believe you will want ceramic coating, not powder coating.

I'm only getting the can powder coated, not the ends or mid pipe. I think the powder coating will be able to resist the amount of heat it will be subjected to there. Anywhere else I would ceramic coat. I can't say I've ever had my muffler get that hot on me before.

You can get at some powder coating places, a super hi temp powder coating. A place I used to work at about 10 years back was powdercoating exhaust manifolds for one of the big 4 car manufactures here in Oz. But the powder is mighty expensive. So Melb, Oz riders, who may wont it, Prestige Plating and Powder Coatings 1001 Mountain Hwy Boriona. See Brett, Colin or George, don't bother mentioning my name they will then charge you double
But beers do help in keeping the cost down, VB is the flavor there. :beers:

Well over the winter I got the sleeve of my yoshi pipe powder coated black. It looks real good and holds up to the heat with no problems at all.
