Buzzard causes fatal motorcycle crash
Published Saturday, August 27th, 2005

A 35-year-old Ridgeland man died Friday afternoon on S.C. 13 in Jasper County after he lost control of his motorcycle when he hit a buzzard, said South Carolina Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Paul Brouthers.
He would not release the man's name until his family is notified.

The man, who was driving a 1995 Kawasaki motorcycle, was traveling north on S.C. 13, also known as Bee's Creek Road, at 1:38 p.m. when he struck a buzzard that flew out onto the road in front of him, Brouthers said. The driver lost control of his motorcycle, crossed the center line and side-swiped a 1989 Chevrolet pickup heading south, Brouthers said.
The motorcycle and driver traveled an additional 480 feet before the man was ejected from the motorcycle, landing in a ditch, Brouthers said. The motorcycle driver had a head injury and wasn't wearing a helmet.

The pickup was driven by Reginald DuPont, 33, of Ridgeland.
Quote

Neither driver contributed to the crash, and the probable cause was the buzzard in the road, Brouthers said. No charges will be filed.

I've had several near misses with buzzards myself in Arkansas. when they are having a roadkill dinner they don't fly til the last minute and you don't know which direction they'll go. I actually had one fly parallel down the road with me once. He finally dropped his prize so he could gain altitude.
Good friends, good times

I hit one in my old F150.  Feathers flew everywhere.   I pulled off, expecting to see a smashed in grill, at least.
There was just a 'buffed' spot on the chrome bumper...

Last year I had a hawk take out my new Zero Gravity screen.

As these things happen in slow motion I was able to account the play by play.

Hawk flys into ditch, grabs what I think is a mouse.

Flys out of ditch straight at the bandit, and trys some low speed manouvers.

Hawk drops mouse (flaps wings a little harder)

Hawk hits windsceen next to mirror with his little pecker poking a hole in my recently purchased $120 USD investment.  :crybaby:  Hawk is instantly decapitated with what is left of the beak & head rolling off the tank, on to my lap & then on the ground. The lifeless body grazing my right shoulder.

Me, the rider stops at the next country coffee shop having to endure the stares of farmers examining my blood & feather stained crotch to clean up the said mess.

Did any of those hayseeds ask if I was ok? Nooooooooooo
