New to the Board.

Hello,

   New to the board. I have a 2001 1200 S Bandit. Love the Bike. I have added a Hole Shot slip on. And am ready ready to add 5 degree ign. adv.,Hotter plugs (any suggestions). And drill 2ea. 1" holes in air box.
Looking forward to chattin.

Landry, Do you think that by drilling the 2 holes in the air box it will throw off my air\fuel mix.

The bike was lean from the factory.  The pipe made it worse.  The hotter pulgs (Why??) and the airbox mod might fry your pistons.

Leave the airbox alone and jet it, before you do some damage!

Take things in steps.  Put in the jet kit and the ignition advancer.  Ride it for awhile to see how things work.  Watch your head pipes for even coloring (one becoming more blue than the others). Then check the plugs for color (you want tan, not white or black).  If it runs good and plugs look good, leave it at that and enjoy!

Would it hurt to go with 5 degree adv.? with out the jet kit at this point?

The advancer probably wouldn't hurt, but If you buy the Holeshot Stage I jet kit, it comes with the advancer.

Unless you're gonna go with one of the Holeshot Stage II kits, you wouldn't need to buy one separately (or do the poor man's advancer).

If you're going to use Ivan's jet kit, he recommends against using one with his kits.

The advancer is a matter of opinion more than anything else.  Holeshot pushes them while other tuners do not.  If you are racing and or trying to get the most peak HP, then an advancer can be a good thing.  If you are street riding however, an advancer is really not what you want since they only bring a slight benefit in the very upper reaches of the rpm range.  At "normal" speeds, it will probably run a little better without one!

If you want better fuel burn, stay at or BELOW 89 octane since the Bandit is a low compression engine.  In your case, it's already way lean, so it's not like there is a lot of extra fuel in there.  Plugs should be the very last thing you mess with as a fine tuning step.

That's not true, Manny. Ivan doesn't recommend one with his kit, but Dale & Factory-Pro both do. Both of them say the advancer improves throttle response and power across the board. Factory-Pro even claims quicker warmup. Factory-Pro's dyno charts on the B12 show stock, Stage 1.0 and Stage 1.0 with advancer and the chart shows the advancer bumps the power and torque curve up at all rpm. It's not a big difference, but it is more.
