Lesbian bikers get 'Dykes on Bikes' trademark
Fri Dec 9, 2005 12:57 PM ET

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Lesbian motorcycle enthusiasts in San Francisco have won their fight to trademark the name "Dykes on Bikes," a lawyer for their group said on Thursday.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office had denied applications by the San Francisco Women's Motorcycle Contingent to trademark "Dykes on Bikes," arguing the phrase would be perceived as disparaging to lesbians.

But the National Center for Lesbian Rights and the Brooke Oliver Law Group said the word "dyke" is no longer viewed as derogatory.

"Within the lesbian community that term has been reclaimed as a very positive term that denotes strength and pride and empowerment," said Shannon Minter, a lawyer for the National Center for Lesbian Rights.

The San Francisco Women's Motorcycle Contingent sought the trademark after a woman in Wisconsin not affiliated with group attempted to use the phrase for a clothing line.

Next time you really want to compliment a female rider, call her "dyke"!  After all, it "denotes strength and pride and empowerment".  Meanwhile, somewhere in Japan, vending machines are being widened to allow the sale of dyke-used motorcycle seats to nattily-dressed businessmen.

Don't believe me? Look at this "little fillie"

Put those RUB's on Harley's to shame. Would you want to meet this person in a dark alley?

I've seen them in a Seattle parade before.
I can understand why they were lesbians... I don't think any guy would have wanted any one of 'em.  What was worse was they were riding topless - with electrical tape over their nipples to appease the Seattle PD... but tape or not, that was certainly indecent exposure!

The first real bulldagger type dyke I ever met, in like 1971 or so, used to live in an apartment near my brother.
She could be one of these ladies in the pictures.  She also had a heartbreakingly beautiful, tall, blonde nurse girlfriend.
It was very confusing to a young guy........... :duh:

Oh god!! Can we lock this thread? Please help us! Can I lock myself out of this post? I don't mind if you're lesbian but please you're scaring the kids! It wouldn't be funny if I rode up and down Yonge St. in Toronto with duct tape on my twig and berries to prove I'm "proud" to be straight. They'd throw me in the lockup for sure!

I can understand how they do it, I just cant understand why. Its like men who want to go through a complete physical sex change to become a woman. Almost all of them want it so that they can have lesbian relationships. The way I see it, its not so much taboo as it is a waste of time. When it comes down to it the tools we were born with comprises 10% of our total body , so why not use the right tool for the right job and enjoy it. The next thing people will want is snap on tools.
