I need some DENT advice.
« on: January 22, 2007, 04:36:24 PM »
So I come out of work one day and I find a small quarter sized dent on the top-right side of my tank.
The bike is in other wise showroom condition. The paint isn't scuffed or cracked around the dent.
I had the idea of sticking my hand in there with some tool to knock it out yet I thought I try here first.
Thanks

Dont try filling the tank with compressed air.

First you could try one of those glue on dent pullers they sell at most automotive part store. If that doesn't work you should remove the tank and drain it of all fuel and see if you can reach inside with something long and strong like a padded screw driver and push up on the dent and pop it out. If that doesn't work someone with skill is going to have to drill a hole and pull the dent, braze, fill and repaint.

The above are all good suggestions, but if you need to get inside, you can gain access to the inside of the B12 tank (and the inside of 2G B6 tanks with gas gauges) from the bottom thru the fuel gauge sender access panel.

Good luck!!

When I had my B4, it had a little wrinkle in the tank.  I always intended to take it to one of those paintless dent places but never did.  I still think it might be worth a shot to at least ask one of them.

I've had several door dings and one larger dent (about 3" long) removed from cars by Dent Busters or Dent Wizards with 100% success.

They probably could do a gas tank without any problems.

The longer you wait to get a dent pulled or pushed, the greater the chance it will crack the paint, and if possible you should try and warm the area up as much as possible if its cold or winter, a heat gun or hair dryer with respect to fire hazards like gasoline.

I was very sceptical but said sure what do I have to lose . it turned out perfect ,and I mean PERFECT . the guy even did the  few door dings we had gratis .I asked him for a stack of his buisiness cards lol , and I sent him quite a bit of work . very impressed with that system . Thanks people I'll let you know how it goes. I think I'll go buy dent wizard first just to see what that would cost. Cheers.

I've had good luck with those paintless dent remove guys too.  I'll bet they can fix your tank for less than $100.  They might even do it on a drive-in without removing & draing the tank.
