ELKHART -- What witnesses described as a game of "chicken" between a sport utility vehicle and a motorcycle ended when the cyclist was taken to the hospital Saturday night.

According to police, the cycle and SUV went toward each other in the 200 block of West Jefferson Street at about 9:20 p.m.

"The two vehicles then began to lunge at each other and then stop. When the vehicles got to a point where they were about 20 feet from each other, they just gunned it at each other," a witness told police. "The motorcycle flipped up in the air upon impact and landed next to the southernmost curb on Jefferson."

After the impact, as the 21-year-old cyclist lay in the street, someone started kicking him.

"A passerby intervened and everyone fled the area," police reported.

Police arrived to find the driver of the motorcycle conscious and alert but bleeding from the face. Paramedics took him to Elkhart General Hospital, where he was treated and released Sunday.

Another officer found the SUV near the intersection of Second Street and Jackson Boulevard.

Officers interviewed occupants of the SUV but no arrests have been made. The injured cyclist told the officer he wanted to speak to an attorney before talking to police.

If two idiots collide on an empty highway and no one sees it . . . do they make a sound?

He wants to talk to an attorney . . .
Ever noticed that they don't make helmets out of bone? There's a reason.
