Insurance Quotes
« on: August 08, 2006, 08:43:26 PM »
Hi guys,

I thought I would share an interesting quote I came across recently.

I have been looking for liability quotes for the FZ6 that I am wanting and just for kicks I got some for the FZ1.

Progressive quoted me at $198 a year (not too bad) for both the FZ6 and FZ1.

I thought it was a mistake so I put in the Bandit 1200 and it quoted it for $185.

Get this though, Geico quoted the FZ6 at $326 but the FZ1 at $300.

How is the world is the FZ1 cheaper than the FZ6?

One of my main reasons for not going with the FZ1 was because I thought I would be paying a lot more for insurance.  But it seems that it might not be the case so I I have to decide if I still want a FZ6 or FZ1.

I am surprised that GEICO would be so much more than Progressive, unless they are quoting different coverage.  I have had GEICO for auto for pretty much my entire driving career, and every few years I do get another quote from elsewhere.  I have had GEICO on the bike since I've owned it, and didn't see anyone offer a better rate *at the same coverage*.

I got my insurance for the bandito 1200 (liability and med pay) along with my truck thru state farm insurance. My rate went up $1/month after they gave me the multi line discount

This is nearly identical to my experience with Progressive and Geico.

My full coverage quote from Progressive for the B400 was less than $180.  Got an instant quote from their website too.

The same amount of coverage from Geico was close to $800      On top of that, I had to wait 2 or three days for someone to email me back.

35. Married with kids and both of us with spotless driving records.  Take a guess who insures me.

Well, I gues it's time to do a little comparison shopping again.  Although I don't know anyone personally who has Prgoressive insurance for anything.

State Farm wanted close to $400 for liability for my B400.  They said that it was the best they could do because they don't contract out their motorcycle insurance as they claim other places do.

I ended up paying $125 at Farmers.

Part of what sets an insurance rate is demographics.

What's the typical demographic that's riding all of the 600 bikes?  CBR600, SV650, FZ6, gixxer 600, etc?

Now, What's the typical demographic that's riding the CB900, FZ1, CBR1000, B12, etc?

Insurance companies will tell you that the "younger" crowd is riding the 600s.  There are more of them being written off, more of them doing damage to other person's property, and more of them with riders getting killed.

When I phoned my ins co for a quote on the 919, the friend with me said that I cringed noticably while waiting for the quote.    I was "pleasantly" surprised, in that the quote wasn't over $1500/yr for a <1 yr licensed rider on a "might as well be a litre bike".   I still found a company that charges less than half of what I was originally quoted and have moved there.  I pay less than $600 for full coverage on the bike.  The comparable CB600 (Hornet 599) is upwards of $750, and MUST have a two-stage alarm professionally installed on it before they'll insure it.

We've been looking at bikes for the other half for a bit now, and he looks at the ins cost for each of them.  -Every- time, the "600" bikes have been more to insure than the litre, litre +,  or near litre bikes.

Yeah, Canadian Ins makes US Ins prices look like a down right bargain.  I think a Canadian insurance company finds out you want to ride a bike and just  says,.. "OK, bend over".  For liability only on any bike I've asked about, it's $250 and up.   I'm pretty sure I heard the "cackle" when I phoned about the first bike.

Here's a really great one,... try having just your motorcycle learner's and insure a bike, so you can get the experience to take the test.  (Under Alberta law, you're allowed to ride with just the learners if there is a licensed motorcyclist behind you either on another bike, or in another vehicle.)  In Alberta, you have -1- ins company to choose from.  Royal Facility.  They are the "you really screwed up bad, but you still wanna drive?  Ok,.. you're going to think prison is a nice place compared to the "treatment" you're going to get from us" company.  It cost me $400 to insure the B4 the first year.  That was liability, theft and fire.   The second year, they wanted $440.   I found another company that wanted $300, I went there.

$300,.. for a B4 that I can only ride 6 months of the year.

Whine all you want, I'm paying $700 a year. I've got 3 years of motorcycle driving experience and up until last weekend no tickets (don't ask, I'm fighting it...)

Well it seems that there are global similarities to insurance prices.

I pay $660 per year for my CB1300.  I have had a clean driving record for 22 years including motorcycle.  The bike is in a locked garage and has a factory engine immobiliser fitted.  In comparison I pay around $300 for both of my four wheeled vehicles one of which is a large 4x4. So I just can't work that out.  Also I pay more for the yearly registration (licensing) than I do for my deisel 4x4, go figure.    :duh:
Taken over by the dark side. Now riding a CB 1300 but visit my old bandit regular.

Actually, that completely illustrates what I was saying about Canadians getting bent over the barrel as compared to the US.

I have my insurance through bikelinE. It is the Markel American Insurance Company. They insure recreational vehicles such as motercycles, jet skis, atvs, boats, and etc. No automobiles. The website is http://www.bikeline.com

My premium for 2006, full coverage for a 33 year old with a clean driving record owning a 1996 Bandit 600s is 112 dollars/year.I don't have passenger insurance, because I don't carry passengers and everything else as far as coverage is set to the normal required limits.
