DPS Sgt. Harold Sanders said the off-duty officer, who has been identified as 27-year veteran George Aguilera, was in his personal vehicle heading south on I-17 behind a motorcycle when he hit the motorcycle.

The impact sent the driver of the motorcycle tumbling onto the freeway. A commercial vehicle that was behind both the motorcycle and Aguilera's car ran over the motorcyclist.

That motorcyclist, identified as Mark Streech, 26, of Phoenix, is in critical condition.

It's not clear if alcohol or other impairment was a factor in the wreck, but Sanders said Aguilera will faces charges of aggravated assault.

"The impairment if it's there will only be additional," Sanders said.

It will be interesting to see what the investigation determines. If its alcohol related the charges will be much worse especially since he was not on duty at the time.
Cant understand how the truck behind both vehicles managed to come around from behind and run over the rider, unless the rider was thrown up in the air and was passed by his own bike and the car and landed in front of the truck. Will have to say a prayer for that rider.

I think one of two things likely happened, the rider was thrown to the left, and the truck was in the left lane, but behind both, OR, the truck was behind both and dodged left to avoid the Mustang more than likely suddenly hitting the brakes, and caught the rider in the process.

Of course, that implies that the rider was thrown to the left,... it's possible he went straight up,.. I wonder how fast you have to be moving to manage to wedge a bike in your engine compartment, rather than down it.

Well if I am not mistaken the bike looks like a Honda CRF 450X in any case a true race dirt bike and pound for pound a race dirt bike is made much stronger then any street bike to withstand tremendous g-force jumps. In this case I think the structure of the bike held up enough to impale itself into the car and the poor rider with nothing to hold him down and probubly relaxed at the time of impact went flying. The big question is where? If the frustrated truck driver did a quick drive around and rumpled over the rider that is pretty sad. Since there is no car roof damage its unlikely he went backwards. He may have held on with one arm strongly which would account for an adjacent lane toss. What is incredible is he lived and hopefully survive as we are all subject to these same possibility like the wildebeests herd that cross crocodile infested waters Gobi river, you never know when you will be next car snack. All you can do is ask sincerely God for his protection and salvation of your spirit before each ride. I know I do though undeserving.

Looks like an XR650R(as opposed to an XR650L)to me. Being that the Mustang is parked on the shoulder, the crash could've happened anywhere on the road. My guess is the bike was passing the truck, Mr. police officer was going WAAYY too fast, went around the truck, didn't see the bike and just drove straight into it. The truck driver, being that he was driving a truck that doesn't do anything in a hurry, probably didn't have any opportunity at all to miss XR guy. The truck driver was more or less an innocent bystander, nothing he could've done. The cop should get the book thrown at him, more than likely he'll get a fine and some probation, and have to work the desk for a couple months.

Thats a good scenario. We have all done it to cars behind us while driving a cage or truck where we quickly pass a very slow vehicle and the vehicle that was tailgating us is slamming his brakes on to avoid a rear end collision. Like you say though the biker might have been unavoidable debris to the truck driver.
I think I mentioned that I came very close to getting killed on my way to LA last weekend when I was about to pass a tractor trailer and the cop following a mile behind for 20 minutes decides to super accelerate cut me off doing at least 130 barely missing me and never stopping to ask me anything like blame or apology. I almost think it was a deliberate show of bravado due to bordom.
